# Georgia State Flag Georgia redesigned its state flag in 1956 to incorporate the [[Confederate Battle Flag]] — a change widely read as a [[Massive Resistance]] signal against school desegregation. The Confederate-dominated design stood until 2001, when Governor Roy Barnes pushed through a much-shrunken version; political backlash contributed to his 2002 defeat. A 2003 redesign produced the current flag, which is modeled on the first Confederate national flag (the "Stars and Bars") rather than the battle flag — a quieter [[Lost Cause]] echo that remains in place. This is a Tier-3 stub. ## See Also - [[Contested Symbols Hub]] - [[Confederate Battle Flag]] - [[South Carolina Statehouse Flag]] · [[Mississippi State Flag]]
