# Charlottesville Robert E. Lee Statue
Equestrian statue of [[Robert E. Lee]] erected in 1924 in what is now Market Street Park, Charlottesville, Virginia. The 2017 city-council vote to remove it became the nominal pretext for the **[[Unite the Right]]** rally of August 2017, during which a white-supremacist attacker killed counter-protester Heather Heyer. The statue was removed in July 2021 and, in 2023, melted down for a community art project ("Swords Into Plowshares").
This is a Tier-2 stub — a candidate for expansion into a full page given its centrality to the 2017 inflection point.
