# The Diary of a Young Girl
The diary [[Anne Frank]] kept from June 1942 to August 1944 while hiding with her family in the concealed Amsterdam annex, ending three days before their betrayal and deportation; Anne died at Bergen-Belsen in early 1945. Published in Dutch as *Het Achterhuis* (Contact, 1947, print run 3,036 copies) through her father Otto's efforts; the 1952 English edition made it the most-read firsthand document of the Holocaust.
## Why It's in the KB
The vault's core witness document for what [[Fascism]] does at the level of one family and one child — the human-scale companion to the structural analyses ([[The Origins of Totalitarianism]]). Two live threads besides: the diary is a recurring **book-challenge target** in the current censorship wave (notably the graphic adaptation, pulled in multiple districts), and Holocaust-memory politics — distortion, minimization, appropriation — is an active front in the vault's historical-revisionism material ([[Erasing History]]).
