# Complicit ***Complicit: How Our Culture Enables Misbehaving Men*** (Gallery Books, June 18, 2024) is a memoir-plus-analysis by Reah Bravo, a former associate producer on Charlie Rose's PBS interview program, about why colleagues, bystanders and victims themselves end up enabling workplace sexual misconduct. In the KB it is a backlog title on the [[Reading Log Hub]] and the book-length treatment of the enabling-culture pattern the vault documents in media companies, above all at [[Fox News]] and [[CBS News]]. ## The author Bravo joined the *Charlie Rose* show in 2007, first as an intern and then as an associate producer, while a Columbia graduate student in international affairs; she left in 2008. In November 2017 she was one of eight women who told *The Washington Post* that Rose had sexually harassed them. She described unwanted advances at his Long Island estate and on business travel, and said: "He was a sexual predator, and I was his victim." CBS News fired Rose and PBS dropped his show the next day. ## The argument The book's claim is that enabling is ordinary, not exceptional. Bravo draws on social-psychology research to argue that institutional incentives, deference to powerful talent, cognitive biases and social conditioning lead people — including committed feminists, and including victims — to accommodate misconduct they would condemn in the abstract. She describes herself as "both a victim *and* an enabler," and argues that change starts with self-awareness about those pressures rather than with better policies alone. The framework overlaps with the vault's [[Bystander Effect]], [[Conformity]] and [[Moral Disengagement]] pages. ## How the vault uses it - **Media harassment settlements.** [[Roger Ailes 40M Fox Severance]] and [[Bill O'Reilly Sexual Harassment Settlements]] link here for the institutional culture that turned harassment into a line item — paid off through settlements and confidentiality terms with no admission of wrongdoing. - **Companion reading.** [[Unscripted]] covers the [[Les Moonves]] scandal at CBS from the boardroom side; Bravo's book covers the same television-news world from the production floor. Both sit alongside the [[MeToo Movement]] and [[Elite Impunity]]. ## See Also - [[Reading Log Hub]] · [[MeToo Movement]] · [[Unscripted]] · [[Roger Ailes]] · [[Bill O'Reilly]] · [[Gretchen Carlson]] · [[Elite Impunity]] · [[Bystander Effect]] · [[Moral Disengagement]]
