# Media Company Timelines Hub
This section collects the **company-level timelines** for the media corporations that shape the American information environment — the studios, networks, and platforms whose ownership, editorial choices, and consolidation deals decide what stories reach the public. Each timeline traces one company from founding to the present, with the KB's recurring analytical spine running through all of them: **who owns the institution, and what that ownership does to the journalism.**
The set exists because the 2025–2026 media-realignment story cannot be told one outlet at a time. The capture of **[[CBS News]]** only makes sense against the **[[Fox News]]** model it is being measured against; the **[[Skydance-Paramount]]** deal only makes sense alongside the streaming-wars pressure documented on the **[[Netflix Timeline]]**; and the pending **[[Warner Bros. Discovery]]** acquisition only makes sense as the next turn of a [[Media Consolidation]] cycle that began with the 1948 Paramount antitrust decrees. Read together, these timelines map the structural transformation of the press into a small number of politically aligned ownership blocs.
## The Analytical Spine
Four themes recur across every timeline in this set:
- **[[Media Capture]]** — how ownership change, not censorship law, realigns a newsroom with political power (the [[Paramount Timeline]] / [[CBS Timeline]] capture story).
- **[[Media Consolidation]]** — the merge-split-remerge cycle that concentrates content and distribution in fewer hands ([[Antitrust]] from the 1948 Paramount Decrees to the 2026 WBD deal).
- **Audience capture & [[Propaganda]]** — how partisan media monetizes a worldview and becomes trapped by it (the [[Fox News Timeline]] / [[Dominion Voting Systems]] story).
- **[[Manufacturing Consent]]** — the through-question: ownership, advertising, and ideological filters shaping the news, asked of both political poles at once.
## The Timelines
### Built
- **[[Paramount Timeline]]** — 1912→2026. From Adolph Zukor's Famous Players and the 1948 antitrust decrees through the Redstone/Viacom empire to the 2025 Skydance sale, the $16M Trump settlement, and the June 2026 DOJ-cleared $111B Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition. The master case study in [[Media Capture]].
- **[[CBS Timeline]]** — 1927→2026. The Tiffany Network of [[Edward R. Murrow]] and [[Walter Cronkite]], the birth of [[60 Minutes]], the Moonves era, and the Weiss-era realignment ending in the [[Scott Pelley Firing]]. How the most storied newsroom in broadcasting was captured by acquisition.
- **[[Fox News Timeline]]** — 1996→2026. Ailes's "machine," the sexual-harassment reckoning, the Trump-White House fusion, the $787.5M [[Dominion Voting Systems]] settlement, and the Murdoch succession. The partisan-media template every imitator tests against.
- **[[CNN and Warner Bros. Discovery Timeline]]** — 1980→2026. Turner's 24-hour-news invention through Time Warner, the AOL catastrophe, the Zucker "fake news" war, AT&T/WarnerMedia, the Zaslav-era WBD, the failed Licht repositioning, and the 2026 sale to [[Skydance-Paramount]] — putting CNN and CBS News under common ownership.
- **[[Netflix Timeline]]** — 1997→2026. The [[Creative Destruction]] of legacy media, the streaming wars, and the rival bid for [[Warner Bros. Discovery]] — the disruption context behind every legacy-network sale.
- **[[Disney Timeline]]** — 1923→2026. Walt's studio through the Iger acquisition machine (Pixar/Marvel/Lucasfilm/Fox), the DeSantis "Don't Say Gay" war, the 2024 [[ABC News]] Trump settlement, and the 2025 [[Jimmy Kimmel]] suspension — the right's favorite culture-war villain, pressured into compliance.
- **[[News Corp Timeline]]** — 1952→2026. The Murdoch publishing/dynasty empire: Fleet Street, the [[New York Post]], the 2007 [[Wall Street Journal]] purchase, phone hacking, the 2013 split, the 2025 trust war, and the WSJ Epstein story that drew a Trump suit. Print companion to the [[Fox News Timeline]].
- **[[Sinclair Broadcast Group Timeline]]** — 1971→2026. Local-news capture: the Smith family roll-up, "must-run" segments, the viral "fake news" promos, the collapsed Tribune deal, and the [[The Baltimore Sun]] takeover.
- **[[Comcast and NBCUniversal Timeline]]** — 1963→2026. The cable giant that did NOT realign right: [[NBC News]]/[[MSNBC]] as the Fox counterweight, and the 2026 [[Versant]] cable spinoff as the structural death of cable news.
- **[[Nexstar and Tegna Timeline]]** — 1996→2026. Local-TV consolidation: Perry Sook's roll-up, [[NewsNation]], and the contested 2025–26 [[Nexstar]]–[[Tegna]] merger the Trump FCC approved by waiving the national ownership cap (the rule that killed Sinclair–Tribune).
- **[[Rumble Timeline]]** — 2013→2026. The alt-tech "free speech" video platform and its funder-to-government pipeline: [[Peter Thiel]]/[[JD Vance]]/[[Howard Lutnick]] money, [[Truth Social]] infrastructure, [[Tether]] crypto, and backers who became the VP, Commerce Secretary, and an FBI deputy director.
- **[[New York Times Timeline]]** — 1851→2026. The newspaper of record as the right's "enemy of the people": Ochs/Sulzberger, Pentagon Papers, the 1619 Project, the [[Tom Cotton]] op-ed and [[Bari Weiss]] exit, and the family-trust/subscription model that resisted capture and is fighting Trump's $15B suit.
- **[[Washington Post Timeline]]** — 1877→2026. The dark mirror of the Times: Watergate to billionaire-owner capitulation under [[Jeff Bezos]] — the killed 2024 endorsement, the 2025 "personal liberties and free markets" opinion mandate, and the 2026 gutting of the newsroom.
- **[[Salem Media Group Timeline]]** — 1974→2026. The religious-right media stack (Christian talk radio + [[Townhall]]/[[RedState]]/[[Regnery Publishing]]), the [[2000 Mules]] disinformation retraction, and the financial collapse off the Nasdaq.
### Adjacent media-power builds
- **[[Gawker Media Timeline]]** — 2002→2023. How [[Peter Thiel]] covertly bankrupted a media outlet through the [[Hulk Hogan]] lawsuit — the landmark case of billionaire litigation finance against the press.
- **[[Wikipedia Timeline]]** — 2001→2026. The knowledge commons as culture-war front: reliability fights, the "woke Wikipedia" critique, the Heritage Foundation's editor-deanonymization plan, and Musk's 2025 [[Grokipedia]].
- **[[Condé Nast Timeline]]** — 1909→2026. The prestige-magazine publisher as "woke media" archetype, the Newhouse/[[Advance Publications]] empire, the *Teen Vogue* turn, and the 2020s labor revolt and contraction.
### Digital disruption and the unbundling
- **[[Gannett Timeline]]** — 1906→2026. The collapse of local news: the GateHouse debt merger, mass layoffs, "ghost papers," and the spread of [[News Deserts]] that national partisan media fills.
- **[[Vox Media Timeline]]** — 2005→2026. The venture-funded digital-native model (SB Nation, The Verge, Vox.com, [[New York Magazine]]), its retrenchment, the writer exodus to the Times and Substack, and the [[OpenAI]] licensing bet.
- **[[BuzzFeed Timeline]]** — 2006→2026. The definitive digital-media boom and bust: viral scale, a Pulitzer-winning newsroom that couldn't be funded, the failed SPAC, and the fire sale.
- **[[Substack Timeline]]** — 2017→2026. The unbundling of journalism: the heterodox-media diaspora, the free-speech-absolutist moderation crisis, and the [[Bari Weiss]]→[[The Free Press]]→[[CBS News]] pipeline.
### Thematic companions (already in the vault)
- **[[Media Timeline]]** — the technology layer underneath every company here: printing press to generative AI, and who held the gate in each era.
- **[[Right-Wing Media Timeline]]** — the ecosystem-level story the company timelines feed into.
- **[[Twitter Timeline]]** / **[[Facebook Timeline]]** — platform capture and the social-media information layer.
## Next to Build
The major players, the digital-disruption cluster, and the local-TV/alt-tech builds are now done. Remaining lower-priority candidates worth a stub-or-timeline decision later: **The Atlantic** (Laurene Powell Jobs / Emerson Collective); **iHeartMedia** (talk radio); **Politico / Axios** (the DC-insider model); **The Daily Wire / Ben Shapiro** (the new conservative-media build); **Truth Social / Trump Media** (the MAGA social platform); **Tucker Carlson Network** (the post-Fox right).
