# George Soros Conspiracy Timeline
The arc by which a real Hungarian-American Jewish philanthropist became the single most cited individual villain in global right-wing conspiracy theory. The timeline below is a chronological reconstruction — what was said, by whom, when — of how a centuries-old antisemitic template (the omnipotent Jewish financier secretly controlling world events) was successfully refitted onto one named living person across the span of roughly three decades. Companion to [[George Soros Conspiracy]] (the structural analysis of the claims) and [[George Soros]] (the person).
The story has six recognizable eras: an **antecedent template** that predates Soros by a century; a **public emergence** in the 1990s where the first fringe attacks appeared in Lyndon LaRouche's orbit; a **mainstreaming moment** in November 2010 when Glenn Beck devoted three Fox News episodes to "The Puppet Master"; a **Hungarian industrial phase** beginning around 2013 when Viktor Orbán's Fidesz built the most sustained state-funded anti-Soros campaign in modern Europe; a **Trump-era weaponization** in which the frame migrated into Breitbart, Fox prime time, and Republican campaign messaging, culminating in the 2018 pipe bombs and the Tree of Life synagogue massacre; and a **post-2020 persistence** in which the conspiracy mutated into the "Soros DA" / "Soros prosecutors" framing while remaining a fixed feature of Republican rhetoric through the 2024 and 2026 cycles.
## Era I — The Antecedent Template (pre-1990)
The Soros conspiracy is not a new invention. It is a 21st-century retrofit of a 19th- and 20th-century template: the omnipotent international Jewish financier. The template was already complete before Soros was born, and is reused here essentially intact.
- **1815 onward** — The **Rothschild myth** emerges in European political pamphlets after the Battle of Waterloo. The Rothschild banking family is recast in popular imagination as the secret financier of both sides of every war, the puppeteer behind every government, the hidden hand behind every revolution. The template becomes the master form of European political antisemitism for the next century.
- **1903** — The **[[Protocols of the Elders of Zion]]**, a forged tsarist-era pamphlet purporting to be the minutes of a Jewish council planning world domination, is first published in Russia. The Protocols are repeatedly proven to be a plagiarized fabrication, but the document supplies the canonical script the Soros conspiracy will later run: a small cabal of Jewish financiers controls the media, the banks, the political parties, the protest movements, and the cultural institutions of every nation simultaneously. [[Henry Ford]] reprints it in the U.S. in *The Dearborn Independent* in 1920. The Nazis make it state ideology in 1933.
- **1944–1947** — A 14-year-old Hungarian Jewish boy named György Schwartz survives the Holocaust in Budapest by living under forged Christian identity papers. He emigrates to England in 1947 and changes his name to George Soros. Decades later, this period of his life — surviving the Holocaust as a hidden child — will be inverted by right-wing conspiracy media and recirculated as the claim that he "collaborated with the Nazis."
## Era II — Public Emergence (1990s)
Soros becomes globally famous as a financial actor in the early 1990s. The first organized conspiracy campaign against him appears almost immediately, originating in the LaRouche network.
- **1979** — Soros makes his first formal philanthropic commitments, funding scholarships for Black South African university students under apartheid and for Eastern European dissidents studying in [[the West]]. This is the seed of what becomes the [[Open Society Foundations]].
- **1984 — May 28** — Soros signs the founding contract of the Soros Foundation/Budapest with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. It is the first Soros foundation outside the United States and the first Western philanthropic foundation operating inside the Eastern Bloc. The young **Viktor Orbán** is among the early Hungarian beneficiaries — Soros funds Orbán's 1989 scholarship at Oxford. The political weight of this fact (the man Orbán will later demonize across continents was once his patron) becomes central to the later Hungarian campaign.
- **1992 — September 16 ("Black Wednesday")** — Soros's fund shorts the British pound, profits an estimated $1 billion in a single trading day, and "breaks the Bank of England." It is the moment Soros becomes a household name as a financier. The event is real and the profit is real; it will be recycled for the next thirty years as standalone evidence that Soros possesses near-magical capacity to manipulate national economies.
- **1993** — The **Open Society Institute** is established as a formal philanthropic network in New York, consolidating Soros's expanding country-by-country foundations into a single entity. (It is later renamed the **Open Society Foundations**, OSF.) The name is drawn from [[Karl Popper]]'s *[[The Open Society and Its Enemies]]*, a foundational liberal anti-totalitarian text from 1945. To Soros, "open society" is shorthand for Popperian liberal democracy. To the later conspiracy, "open society" will be reread as a coded euphemism for borderless globalism.
- **1996 — November 1** — Lyndon **LaRouche**'s *Executive Intelligence Review* (EIR) publishes the foundational text of modern anti-Soros conspiracism: an article accusing Soros of orchestrating an Anglo-French-Jewish-liberal financial conspiracy "in partnership with the Rothschilds, who 'launched Soros's career.'" This is the originating moment in the documented record. The LaRouche network is at this point a fringe political cult, but its publications are the seedbed from which much of the later Soros conspiracy vocabulary travels.
- **1997** — LaRouche publications escalate with two extended attacks: *George Soros: The Queen's Drug Pusher* and *George Soros: A Golem Made in Britain* (both heavy with explicit antisemitic mythology — the Golem, the Queen-as-puppeteer). The themes — Soros as drug-pushing destabilizer, Soros as British-Jewish creature, Soros as currency manipulator-by-design — become the master vocabulary the modern right inherits.
- **1999** — Soros's funding of drug-policy reform (especially needle exchange and medical-marijuana initiatives) becomes the first specific *policy domain* targeted in anti-Soros media. The drug-legalization line is one of the longest-running threads in the conspiracy and is still cited 25 years later.
## Era III — The First U.S. Right-Wing Wave (2003–2009)
Soros transforms from financial celebrity into political donor in this period, and the U.S. right responds with the first organized campaign — though it remains mostly a partisan donor-criticism frame, not yet the full conspiracy-theory weaponization that will follow.
- **2003–2004** — Soros becomes the largest single individual donor opposing [[George W. Bush]]'s reelection, contributing over **$27 million** to anti-Bush 527 groups (MoveOn, America Coming Together, the Media Fund). He gives interviews declaring that defeating Bush is "the central focus of my life." This is the inflection point at which Soros becomes a *partisan U.S. political actor* in addition to being a global philanthropist. Conservative media — *National Review*, *Wall Street Journal* editorial page, talk radio — begin sustained criticism. The frame is still recognizably partisan (a rich donor backing the other side), not yet metaphysical.
- **2004–2007** — Republican opposition research, conservative book publishing (Richard Poe and [[David Horowitz]]'s *The Shadow Party*, 2006), and talk radio begin assembling the building blocks of the modern conspiracy: Soros as funder of a hidden Democratic infrastructure, "Shadow Party" as the operative metaphor.
- **2008** — Soros backs [[Barack Obama]]. Conservative media activates the "Soros-funded Obama" frame, treating Soros's donations to liberal organizations as evidence of orchestrated political control rather than ordinary political giving. The asymmetry is already visible: identical or larger donations from the Koch network on the right are treated as legitimate civic participation.
## Era IV — The Glenn Beck Mainstreaming (2010)
The pivotal moment at which the Soros conspiracy crosses from fringe right-wing publications into a primetime Fox News audience of millions. This is the single most important event in the conspiracy's modern history.
- **2010 — October 19, October 20, November 9–11** — **Glenn Beck** devotes a sequence of Fox News broadcasts to George Soros. The centerpiece is a **three-part series titled "The Puppet Master"** airing November 9, 10, and 11, 2010. Across these episodes Beck features Richard Poe and *The Shadow Party*, calls Soros the "Puppet Master," accuses him of orchestrating revolutions and currency crashes for personal profit, and replays the falsified "Soros collaborated with the Nazis" claim — directed at a man who as a 14-year-old Jewish child hid from Nazi deportation under forged papers. The visual grammar of the broadcasts — the chalkboard diagrams, the puppet-strings imagery — supplies the iconography the conspiracy uses for the next fifteen years.
- **2010 — November 11** — The Anti-Defamation League's national director Abe Foxman issues a public statement calling Beck's series "completely inappropriate, offensive, and over the top." Major Jewish organizations across the spectrum — including the *Jewish Forward*, the *Jewish Telegraphic Agency*, J Street, and Reform Judaism's URJ — condemn the broadcasts as trafficking in classical antisemitic tropes. Fox News and Beck reject the criticism. The complaint becomes the template for every subsequent organized Jewish-community pushback for the next decade and a half: clear, well-sourced, and largely ineffective at shifting right-wing media behavior.
- **2011** — Beck departs Fox News in June. The Puppet Master frame, however, has been laundered. It is now a stable feature of the Fox News and talk-radio universe and increasingly common in mainstream Republican rhetoric. "Soros-funded" enters the conservative lexicon as a generic delegitimizing modifier attachable to any progressive cause, organization, or politician.
## Era V — The Hungarian Industrial Phase (2013–2018)
Beginning in the mid-2010s, the Orbán government in Hungary builds something genuinely new in the conspiracy's history: a sustained, state-funded, industrial-scale anti-Soros propaganda campaign that runs across billboards, television, radio, and legislation. It is the most extensive operationalization of the conspiracy by any government anywhere, and it becomes the export model the U.S. right (especially Tucker Carlson and CPAC) studies and emulates.
- **2013–2014** — As Orbán consolidates Fidesz's dominance after his 2010 supermajority, Hungarian government rhetoric increasingly identifies Soros as the financier of NGOs, independent media, and refugee-rights groups operating in the country. Central European University (CEU), founded by Soros in Budapest in 1991, becomes the symbolic target.
- **2015** — The European migration crisis. Orbán deploys Soros explicitly as the alleged architect of the migration influx, arguing that Soros "wants to dismantle the fence" — referring to the razor-wire barrier Hungary built on its southern border. The framing fuses two preexisting tropes (Soros as globalist, Soros as orchestrator of demographic change) and pairs them with [[Great Replacement Theory]]. The fusion proves enormously durable.
- **2017 — Summer** — Fidesz launches a nationwide billboard campaign featuring **Soros's face** captioned "Let's not let Soros have the last laugh." Posters appear on every major road in Hungary; reports of antisemitic graffiti added to the posters (including swastikas and "stinking Jew" annotations) proliferate. Israel's ambassador to Hungary publicly condemns the campaign as evoking "sad memories" of the 1930s. The Hungarian government doubles down rather than retracting.
- **2018 — April** — Fidesz wins the parliamentary election with 49% on a platform almost entirely organized around Soros and migration. The state has spent over €100 million of public funds on anti-Soros and anti-migration messaging in the run-up to the vote. Soros announces that the Open Society Foundations are relocating their Budapest operations to Berlin; the Foundation describes Hungary as no longer safe for civil-society work.
- **2018 — June 20** — Hungary passes the formally-named **"Stop Soros" package** of laws, criminalizing assistance to undocumented migrants and constraining the operations of NGOs that work with asylum seekers. Hungary becomes the first EU member state to enact legislation explicitly named after a single private individual cast as a national enemy. The package is the high-water mark of the conspiracy's translation into binding state policy.
- **2018 — December 3** — Central European University announces it is leaving Budapest after Hungarian law changes have made its continued operation impossible. The university relocates the bulk of its accredited programs to Vienna. CEU's expulsion is the most concrete institutional casualty of the Soros conspiracy globally.
## Era VI — Trump-Era Weaponization in the United States (2015–2020)
While Orbán is building the Hungarian campaign, the U.S. right migrates the Beck-era framing from talk-radio standard to active campaign weapon. The Trump 2016 campaign, Steve Bannon's Breitbart, and the broader Fox News ecosystem fuse Soros, "globalists," and antisemitic visual grammar into a coordinated frame. The convergence is followed by lethal real-world violence.
- **2012–2016** — Under **Steve Bannon** as executive chairman (from March 2012), *Breitbart News* runs increasingly explicit Soros conspiracy material, including articles describing him as the "Puppet Master" and as an "octopus" — both classical antisemitic visual metaphors. Bannon describes Breitbart as "the platform for the alt-right."
- **2016 — November 4** — Five days before the U.S. presidential election, the Trump campaign airs a **closing two-minute ad** narrated by Trump, attacking "a global power structure responsible for the economic decisions that have robbed our working class." The ad cuts to images of three Jewish figures: **Soros**, then-Fed Chair Janet Yellen, and Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein. The Anti-Defamation League publicly identifies the ad as deploying antisemitic tropes. The ad is not retracted.
- **2017 — August 12** — In Charlottesville, marchers at the "[[Unite the Right]]" rally chant "Jews will not replace us." The chant explicitly fuses Soros conspiracy ([[Great Replacement Theory]]) with the older antisemitic template. Trump's response — "very fine people on both sides" — marks the moment Soros conspiracy adjacency becomes broadly compatible with elected Republican Party leadership.
- **2018 — October** — In the weeks before the U.S. midterm election, **Fox News mentions Soros over 1,000 times in 2018**. Trump, [[Donald Trump Jr.]], and senior Republicans repeatedly assert that Soros is funding the "migrant caravan" approaching the U.S. southern border. The "Soros-funded caravan" claim becomes the dominant pre-election Republican message.
- **2018 — October 22** — A homemade pipe bomb is discovered at **George Soros's home** in Westchester County, New York. It was opened on October 15 by a Soros employee but treated as live ordnance. It is the first of **16 improvised explosive devices** mailed by **Cesar Sayoc** — a Trump rally attendee and consumer of right-wing conspiracy media — to Soros, Barack Obama, [[Hillary Clinton]], [[Joe Biden]], [[John Brennan]]/CNN, Maxine Waters, Robert De Niro, and other prominent Trump critics. Sayoc is arrested October 26 in Florida. He pleads guilty in March 2019 to 65 felony counts and is sentenced to 20 years.
- **2018 — October 27** — **Robert Bowers** kills 11 people and wounds 6 at the **Tree of Life — Or L'Simcha synagogue** in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill neighborhood. It is the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history. Bowers's social media (especially on Gab) is saturated with conspiracist anti-immigrant content; in his final pre-attack post he attacks HIAS, a Jewish refugee-resettlement nonprofit, writing that "HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people" — the structural template of [[Great Replacement Theory]] which the Soros conspiracy has been steadily feeding into. The attack arrives the same week as the pipe bombs and at the height of Trump's "caravan" messaging. It is the most explicit demonstration to date of the conspiracy's status as a vector for stochastic terrorism.
- **2018 — Late October to Election Day** — Despite the pipe bombs and Pittsburgh, the Soros-funded-caravan messaging continues from Trump and Fox News through the midterm election on November 6. Republican losses in the House are widely attributed to suburban backlash, but the persistence of the messaging through two weeks of Soros-targeted violence becomes a documented case study in conspiracy-theory immunity to real-world consequence.
- **2020** — During the George Floyd protests, the claim that "Soros is funding Antifa" / "Soros is funding BLM" / "Soros is funding the rioters" is amplified across Fox News and Republican social media to the point that it becomes a default explanation on the right for the entire 2020 protest cycle. There is no evidence; Antifa is not an organization and has no funding.
## Era VII — Persistence and Mutation (2020–2026)
After 2020 the conspiracy does not retreat — it mutates. The "Soros prosecutor" framing emerges as a new vehicle that can attach to specific elected DAs and be deployed in concrete campaign settings. The older frames (Soros as globalist puppet, Soros behind the protests, Soros behind immigration) remain in continuous Republican circulation.
- **2020–2021** — The **"Soros DA"** / **"Soros-funded prosecutor"** frame matures. It builds on Soros's documented funding (~$40 million between 2012 and 2022 through the Justice and Public Safety PAC) of reform-oriented prosecutor candidates including Larry Krasner (Philadelphia), Kim Foxx (Cook County), George Gascón (Los Angeles), Kim Gardner (St. Louis), and others. The right-wing frame reattributes any post-2020 crime increase in any city with such a prosecutor to "Soros DAs" specifically. The label becomes a [[Heritage Foundation]] and *Wall Street Journal* editorial staple. The omitted half of the ledger — [[William Oberndorf]] and allied donors funding the recall and opposition campaigns at comparable scale — is set out in [[Progressive Prosecutor]].
- **2022 — Spring** — **Alvin Bragg** is sworn in as Manhattan District Attorney. Within weeks the "Soros-funded Bragg" frame is universal across right-wing media and is reactivated through every subsequent stage of Bragg's prosecution of Donald Trump in the Stormy Daniels hush-money case (indictment April 2023, conviction May 2024).
- **2022 — Summer** — **Tucker Carlson** broadcasts his Fox News program live from Hungary for a week (his second such trip; the first was August 2021). He platforms Orbán as a model of nationalist governance and frames the Hungarian "Stop Soros" architecture admiringly. Hungary is reverse-imported into U.S. right-wing media as the operational template. **CPAC Hungary** debuts in May 2022 in Budapest, with Orbán delivering the keynote; subsequent CPAC Hungary events run in 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026.
- **2023 — June** — Soros publicly transfers stewardship of the Open Society Foundations to his son **[[Alex Soros]]**. Right-wing media responds with a new framing — "the Soros dynasty" — but the conspiracy continues to attribute essentially all post-2023 progressive infrastructure to George Soros personally, regardless of whether he is operationally involved.
- **2024 — Election cycle** — "Soros," "Soros-funded," and "Soros DA" remain standard Republican campaign vocabulary across federal, state, and local races. Trump's general-election messaging routinely names Soros as a personal antagonist. The frame is fully institutionalized within the GOP and no longer requires explanation to its audience.
- **2025–2026** — The Department of Justice under the second Trump administration opens investigations described in right-wing media as targeting "Soros-backed" district attorneys (notably in Fairfax County, Virginia). The "Soros prosecutor" frame has crossed from political messaging into an operational basis for federal action against locally elected officials. The full institutional consequences are still developing as of mid-2026.
## Why this matters
The Soros conspiracy is the cleanest case study available of how an antisemitic template that already existed for a century — the omnipotent Jewish financier secretly controlling world events — can be successfully refitted onto a single living individual and laundered from fringe occult publications into the explicit campaign messaging of major political parties, the broadcast output of cable news networks, and (in Hungary's case) the law of an EU member state. The arc takes approximately 30 years from LaRouche's 1996 origination to "Soros DA" as Republican standard vocabulary. It has produced documented real-world violence — the 2018 pipe bombs, the Tree of Life massacre — and the institutional expulsion of CEU from Budapest. It is also, structurally, the model for how subsequent conspiracies (Great Replacement, "groomer" panic, anti-DEI campaigns) build: identify a real actor doing real political work, scale that activity to metaphysical proportions, attach an inherited antisemitic or racialized template, and circulate the result through partisan media until it becomes a default explanation on the right.
