# White Supremacy Lexicon
Cross-cutting navigation layer that aggregates white supremacy-related terms in the vault — drawn from `/Terminology/White Supremacy/`, `/Concepts/`, and adjacent folders. The vocabulary spans the historical architecture of racial oppression in the United States from slavery through Jim Crow to contemporary ethnonationalism.
## Historical systems
The legal and institutional mechanisms of racial domination.
- [[Americas Original Sin]] — the framing of slavery as the foundational moral failure of the United States, whose consequences permeate every subsequent institution; the starting point for understanding structural racism
- [[Peculiar Institution]] — the antebellum Southern euphemism for slavery; the sanitizing language that made human bondage speakable in polite society
- [[Black Codes]] — the laws passed by Southern states immediately after the Civil War to restrict Black freedom and labor mobility; the legal bridge between slavery and Jim Crow
- [[Convict Leasing]] — the post-Civil War system of leasing imprisoned people (overwhelmingly Black, arrested under Black Codes) to private companies for forced labor; slavery by another name, lasting into the 1940s
- [[Literacy Tests]] — voter suppression tools requiring literacy or constitutional interpretation as a precondition for voting; designed to be unpassable for Black voters while white voters were exempted through grandfather clauses
- [[Poll Tax]] — a fee required to vote, designed to disenfranchise poor Black voters (and poor white voters as acceptable collateral damage); not fully banned until the 24th Amendment (1964) and Harper v. Virginia (1966)
- [[Massive Resistance]] — the coordinated Southern campaign to resist school desegregation after Brown v. Board of Education (1954); included school closures, private "segregation academies," and legislative obstruction
- [[Interposition]] — the pre-Civil War doctrine (revived during Massive Resistance) that states can "interpose" their authority between the federal government and their citizens to nullify federal law
- [[Nullification]] — the theory that states can void federal laws they consider unconstitutional; from John C. Calhoun's defense of slavery through the Civil War to contemporary "constitutional sheriff" movements
## Political identity and resistance labels
- [[Copperhead]] — Northern Democrats who opposed the Civil War and advocated negotiated peace with the Confederacy; the historical precedent for domestic political opposition to wars against white supremacist movements
- [[Aryan]] — originally a linguistic category (Indo-Iranian languages); appropriated by Nazi racial ideology to mean a mythical "pure" white race, and still used by white supremacist organizations
## Contemporary vocabulary
- [[Ethnopluralism]] — the intellectual repackaging of segregation: the claim that different ethnic groups should maintain separate homelands to "preserve diversity"; the European New Right's rhetorical laundering of ethnonationalism
- [[Remigration]] — the far-right euphemism for mass deportation of immigrants and ethnic minorities; framed as voluntary "return" but understood by advocates as forced removal; increasingly mainstreamed in European politics

*Merged 2026-08-31 from a parallel `Ideologies/White Supremacy Lexicon.md` page. The sections above organize the white supremacy vocabulary **by function**; the A–Z below is the same vocabulary **alphabetically**, with definitions. Two views of one list — use the functional grouping to reason about how the pieces fit, the alphabetical one to look up a term you met in the wild.*
## Why two views?
The framework views at [[White Supremacy]] (the umbrella Ideology — the worldview and institutional-system) and the foundational Concepts ([[The Confederacy]], [[Reconstruction and Its Overthrow]], [[Jim Crow Era]], [[Lynching]], [[The Lost Cause]], [[Confederate Monuments]]) organize material by *historical period and analytical category* — useful when reasoning about white supremacy through-line. The lexicon view sorts alphabetically — useful when you encounter a term in the wild and need a definition fast, and useful for pattern-spotting across the different sub-vocabularies (the antebellum-political-rhetoric cluster, the Reconstruction-era-legal cluster, the Jim Crow voter-suppression cluster, the constitutional-theory cluster).
## A — Z
### America's Original Sin
[[Americas Original Sin]] — Moral-historical framing of slavery as the foundational American moral-and-political-and-civilizational injury. Lineage from Madison through Lincoln through Du Bois through Jim Wallis through Ta-Nehisi Coates. Contemporary right-wing political-discourse contests the framing as anti-American political vocabulary; counter-framework to [[The Lost Cause]] historiographic project.
### Aryan
[[Aryan]] — Originally legitimate philological-academic category designating Indo-Iranian language speakers; appropriated through late-19th-century racial-pseudoscience into putative racial category; canonical Nazi German racial-political-project ideological-vocabulary; persisted in post-WWII neo-Nazi, [[Aryan Nations]], [[Accelerationism (White Nationalist)]], and [[Christian Identity]] vocabulary. Documentary case of academic-vocabulary appropriation into racial-supremacist political project.
### Black Codes
[[Black Codes]] — Immediate post-Civil-War (1865-1866) Southern legal-regime that criminalized Black freedom through race-targeted vagrancy, unauthorized-employment, unauthorized-residence, unauthorized-travel, and adjacent administrative-violation provisions; channeled formerly-enslaved people into [[Convict Leasing]] forced-labor systems. White-Southern political-elite's first-systematic response to slavery's abolition.
### Convict Leasing
[[Convict Leasing]] — Post-Civil-War (1865-1928) Southern labor-extraction system through which state governments leased convicted prisoners (overwhelmingly Black, frequently convicted under [[Black Codes]]-style discriminatory enforcement) to private businesses for forced labor. Operationalized the 13th-Amendment's "punishment for crime" exemption. Documented mortality rates of 16-25% annually in extractive operations. Douglas Blackmon's "slavery by another name" framework.
### Copperhead
[[Copperhead]] — Civil-War-era pejorative for Northern Democrats who opposed Lincoln's war-prosecution and advocated negotiated-settlement preserving slavery; derived from venomous snake whose appearance does not visibly distinguish it from non-venomous species, framing the faction as concealed-internal-enemy. Clement Vallandigham (Ohio) the principal figure; Vallandigham case principal civil-liberty-restriction case.
### Interposition
[[Interposition]] — Constitutional-theory designation for state-government claim to constitutional authority to "interpose" sovereignty between federal authority and state's citizens. Traces to Jefferson-Madison Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions (1798); elaborated by John C. Calhoun in antebellum period; revived by white-Southern political-elite in 1950s massive-resistance response to [[Brown v. Board of Education]]. Contemporary echoes in state-defiance politics across political spectrum.
### Literacy Tests
[[Literacy Tests]] — Jim Crow-era voter-suppression mechanism through which Southern (and some Northern) state-governments imposed literacy-or-reading requirements as precondition for voter registration, deployed with substantially-racially-disparate enforcement. Mississippi Plan (1890) the foundational template. Voting Rights Act of 1965 substantially-eliminated. Functional-equivalent contemporary voter-suppression infrastructure post-[[Shelby County v. Holder]] (2013).
### Nullification
[[Nullification]] — Constitutional-theory designation for state-government claim to constitutional authority to declare federal laws unconstitutional and refuse enforcement. More-aggressive variant of [[Interposition]] doctrinal tradition. Calhoun's *South Carolina Exposition and Protest* (1828) the principal antebellum theoretical articulation. Substantial 1832-1833 Nullification Crisis. Civil War substantially-defeated the doctrine at federal-political-military level; contemporary echoes in state-defiance politics across political spectrum.
### Peculiar Institution
[[Peculiar Institution]] — Antebellum Southern political-rhetorical euphemism for the institution of slavery; derived from older "peculiar" meaning of "distinctive" or "particular." Calhoun substantially-popularized the deployment. Operated as linguistic-displacement strategy that allowed antebellum political-discussion of slavery without using the more politically-charged "slavery" term directly. Kenneth Stampp's 1956 scholarly-historical recovery as documentary-analytical vocabulary.
### Poll Tax
[[Poll Tax]] — Jim Crow-era voter-suppression mechanism through which Southern (and some Northern) state-governments imposed monetary-tax payment as precondition for voter registration or voting. Operationalized economic-class-barrier as principal voter-suppression mechanism while preserving formal-racial-neutrality. [[Twenty-Fourth Amendment]] (1964) abolished for federal elections; *Harper v. Virginia Board of Elections* (1966) extended to state-and-local elections. Contemporary felony-disenfranchisement-fines functional-equivalent.
