# Drone
An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) — any aircraft operated without a human pilot on board. The term spans consumer photography quadcopters ($50) to MQ-9 Reaper strike platforms ($32M). The technology that democratized both aerial surveillance and precision strike, collapsing capabilities that once required air forces into packages that insurgent groups, police departments, and hobbyists can afford.
The drone revolution's vault significance centers on three dynamics:
**Proliferation and asymmetry.** Ukraine's use of cheap commercial drones modified with grenades against Russian armor demonstrated that $500 drones can destroy $3M vehicles. This asymmetry restructures military economics: expensive platforms become vulnerable to swarms of disposable ones. The Pentagon's Replicator initiative is the institutional response — fielding thousands of autonomous drones to maintain U.S. advantage before adversaries do.
**Surveillance normalization.** Police departments deploy drones for routine surveillance operations that would have required helicopters or satellites a decade ago. [[Flock Safety]]'s network, [[Airship AI]]'s border surveillance, and the ubiquity of consumer drones in public spaces have normalized persistent aerial observation. The legal framework has not kept pace.
**The autonomy spectrum.** Current military drones are mostly remotely piloted (a human operator controls the aircraft). The transition to autonomous drones — systems that fly, identify targets, and potentially strike without real-time human control — is the live edge of the [[Autonomous Weapons Debate]]. [[Shield AI]]'s Hivemind and [[Anduril Barracuda]] represent this transition.
**Key companies:** [[Skydio]] (U.S. autonomous drones), [[Shield AI]] (military autonomous aircraft), [[Anduril]] (Barracuda strike drone), DJI (Chinese market leader, increasingly banned by U.S. government).
