# 5G
5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and the capacity to connect far more devices per area than 4G/LTE. It uses a mix of frequency bands, including high-frequency "millimeter wave" spectrum that carries enormous bandwidth over short distances, which is why dense 5G requires many small cell sites. The genuine significance of 5G is less about faster phone downloads than about enabling the [[Internet of Things]] at scale — connecting vast numbers of sensors, vehicles, and industrial systems.
## Why it matters here
5G is the rare connectivity standard that became a culture-war and conspiracy object, and it earns its place here as much for the rhetoric as for the technology.
**The conspiracy ecosystem.** A durable cluster of false claims holds that 5G radiation causes illness, and — during 2020 — that 5G either caused or spread COVID-19. These claims are physically baseless (5G uses non-ionizing radio waves, like all prior cellular generations), but they spread widely, were amplified by wellness and anti-establishment influencers, and in the UK led to arson attacks on cell towers. 5G thus became a case study in how a mundane infrastructure upgrade can be absorbed into an anti-technology, anti-authority worldview that overlaps with anti-vaccine and "control grid" narratives. The "they're building the surveillance grid" framing connects 5G rhetorically to [[Internet of Things]] and [[Surveillance State]] fears — a place where a real privacy concern and a fantastical health panic ride the same vehicle.
**The geopolitics (the real story).** The substantive 5G fight was about *who builds the network*. The US campaign to bar China's Huawei from Western 5G infrastructure — on national-security grounds that Chinese-made network gear could enable espionage or sabotage — was an early, bipartisan front in [[Tech Decoupling]] and the broader contest with [[China]]. This is the 5G story that actually mattered for policy, and it is consistently overshadowed in popular discourse by the health conspiracy.
