# Misogyny Lexicon
The vocabulary in which contemporary American misogyny operates and is contested — the manosphere ecosystem's in-group identity vocabulary, the anti-feminist political slurs, the manosphere-discourse projection-categories, and the foundational feminist analytical-vocabulary that the contemporary anti-feminist movement substantially contests. This is the **alphabetical dictionary view** for the Misogyny vocabulary, mirroring the pattern at [[Authoritarianism Lexicon]] and [[Cults]]: every entry lives in its canonical home (`/Terminology/Misogyny/` for vocabulary; `/Concepts/` for the underlying phenomena; `/Ideologies/` for the worldviews-and-organized-movements), and this page is the single misogyny-oriented map across all of them.
For the **structural-system framework view**, see [[Patriarchy]]. For the **affective-attitudinal framework view**, see [[Misogyny]].
## Why two views?
The framework views at [[Patriarchy]] (the structural-system) and [[Misogyny]] (the affective-attitudinal phenomenon) organize material by *what role it plays in the analysis* — useful when reasoning about misogyny structurally or comparatively. The lexicon view sorts alphabetically — useful when you encounter a term in the wild and need a definition fast, and useful for pattern-spotting across the different sub-vocabularies (the foundational-feminist analytical-vocabulary cluster, the manosphere-ecosystem in-group-vocabulary cluster, the contested-political-slur cluster).
## A — Z
### Double Standard
[[Double Standard]] — Foundational feminist analytical-vocabulary designating the structural pattern by which equivalent behaviors are differently-evaluated when performed by women versus men. Operates across multiple sub-domains (sexual, professional, emotional, parenting, appearance). Pre-feminist English-language usage predates contemporary feminist analytical-vocabulary substantially.
### Hysteria
[[Hysteria]] — Pre-modern medical-vocabulary category for supposed female-specific psychological-and-physical symptoms, derived from Greek *hystera* (uterus). 2,500-year-medical-category, formally removed from DSM in 1980, persists in contemporary rhetorical-political-deployment as gendered-dismissive vocabulary for women's emotional expression, political assertion, or feminist analytical critique. The archetype of using medical authority to pathologize women's legitimate distress and autonomy.
### Incel
[[Incel]] — Self-applied identity term within contemporary online-male-grievance ecosystem; "involuntary celibate." Coined by Alana (1993) as inclusive support-community vocabulary; subsequently appropriated through 4chan / Reddit / forum-specific masculinist deployment through 2014; subsequently linked to multiple documented mass-casualty attacks ([[Elliot Rodger]] 2014, Alek Minassian 2018, and others). The entry point for broader right-wing radicalization. Paired with [[Incel Ideology]].
### Karen
[[Karen]] — Contemporary polysemic slang for entitled-white-middle-class-woman archetype. Three substantially-distinct deployment registers: (1) feminist-anti-racist class-and-race critique; (2) misogynist anti-feminist generalization; (3) anti-Black-women specific deployment. Emerged through Black Twitter and feminist online discourse ~2017-2018. Functions as both legitimate critique of weaponized white femininity and a gendered dismissal of women asserting boundaries.
### Mansplaining
[[Mansplaining]] — Successful late-2000s feminist analytical-vocabulary coinage; the gendered pattern in which a man condescendingly explains a subject to a woman who has substantial or expert knowledge of the subject. Solnit 2008 essay-and-2014-book provided substantial analytical-content; specific portmanteau emerged from online feminist discourse 2008-2010; Oxford/Merriam-Webster dictionary inclusion 2018.
### Micropenis
[[Micropenis]] — Originally clinical-anatomical term; contemporary deployment across three substantially-distinct registers: (1) manosphere-internal pejorative against feminist/progressive men; (2) feminist-and-progressive counter-deployment against right-coded male public figures; (3) viral "small dick energy / SDE" meme (paired with BDE coined June 2018). Body-shaming-as-political-discourse documentary case operating substantially-symmetrically across the political spectrum. The gendered attack that reveals the movement's equation of political authority with sexual potency.
### Negging
[[Negging]] — Pickup-artistry (PUA) technique designating deliberate low-grade insult or backhanded compliment intended to reduce target's self-esteem and make them more susceptible to PUA attention. Coined / popularized by Erik von Markovik ("Mystery") in early 2000s; Neil Strauss's 2005 *The Game* brought mass-market awareness. Operationalization of emotional-manipulation-as-seduction-strategy.
### Volcel
[[Volcel]] — Manosphere-and-incel-ecosystem sub-vocabulary designating voluntary celibate. Counter-positioned to "incel"; deployed across three substantially-distinct registers: (1) aspirational identity (overlaps with MGTOW); (2) pejorative-against-incels (in-group-status-policing); (3) religious-or-asexual self-identification (appropriated by incel-ecosystem). Makes visible the broader incel-ecosystem in-group-status-taxonomy.
