# Equity
Ownership value — what remains after subtracting what you owe from what you own (assets minus liabilities). Home equity, shareholder equity, and "sweat equity" are all the same residual: the piece that is actually *yours*. Equity is the counterpart to debt in financing anything, and the choice between the two — who holds the residual claim and who holds the fixed claim — determines who bears risk, who captures upside, and where power sits.
## The Mechanism
Equity is the *residual* claim, and that word carries the whole model. Debt-holders get paid first, in fixed amounts, whatever happens; equity-holders get whatever is left — nothing in a bankruptcy, everything in a boom. So equity is the risk-bearing, upside-capturing, control-holding position, and debt is the safer, capped, quieter one. This is why the debt-vs-equity choice is never neutral: financing with debt ([[Leverage]]) keeps ownership and upside concentrated in the existing equity-holders while shifting risk onto creditors and, in the too-big cases, the public. The [[2008 Financial Crisis]] was in one sense a fight over who absorbed the equity losses — and the answer, via bailouts, was that private equity-holders kept boom-time gains while public balance sheets absorbed bust-time losses, a privatize-gains/socialize-losses asymmetry the vault documents repeatedly.
Home equity is the same idea at household scale, and its distribution is the backbone of the racial and generational wealth gap: who was allowed to build home equity (and when, and where) is a large part of who holds wealth now.
## KB Applications
### The private-equity extraction model
The vault's [[Rent-Seeking]] and financial-power files track "private equity" as an ownership *strategy*: buy a company using mostly borrowed money, so a small equity stake controls a large asset, then extract value (dividend recaps, asset sales, fee streams) while the acquired firm carries the debt. The equity/debt asymmetry is the whole mechanism — the fund holds the upside residual, the portfolio company and its workers hold the risk. Understanding equity as the concentrated-upside, control-bearing claim is what makes the extraction legible.
### Equity as the wealth-gap variable
Because [[Asset]] ownership compounds faster than wages (r > q), *equity* ownership — the residual that appreciates — is where dynastic and racial wealth divergence lives. "Building equity" is the actual mechanism of middle-class wealth, which is why policies governing who can accumulate it (housing, credit, redlining's legacy) are wealth policy whether or not they're labeled that way.
