# Crypto Mining
The process by which new coins are created and transactions are confirmed on a [[Proof of Work]] blockchain like [[Bitcoin]]. Miners run specialized hardware that races to solve a computationally expensive puzzle; the winner appends the next block to the [[Blockchain]] and collects newly minted coins plus transaction fees as a reward. The work is deliberately wasteful — the difficulty auto-adjusts so that no matter how much hardware joins, a block arrives roughly every ten minutes. That waste is the security feature: rewriting history would require out-computing the entire honest network.
## Why the term matters
Mining is where crypto becomes physical, and where it becomes political in a register beyond ideology. A global Bitcoin mining industry consumes electricity on the order of a mid-sized country, which makes "mining" the term that connects crypto to energy markets, grid policy, and climate debate. [[Proof of Stake]] was developed substantially to eliminate this energy cost; Ethereum's 2022 switch cut its consumption by an estimated 99%, leaving Bitcoin as the largest remaining proof-of-work holdout.
For this vault, mining has a specifically American political dimension. Crypto miners have become a red-state economic-development story — large facilities in Texas and the rural South pitched as job creators, and increasingly courted as flexible grid loads that get paid to power down during demand spikes. The Trump family's [[American Bitcoin Corp]] (part of [[Trump Crypto Ventures]]) put the sitting president's family directly into the mining business. Mining's energy appetite also keeps it entangled with deregulation politics: the industry's interest in cheap, abundant, fossil-friendly power aligns it with the energy-dominance wing of the administration, turning an arcane technical process into a constituency.
