> Orientation is here; the full discipline cluster — classical theory, stratification, institutions, and the sociology of the right — lives at [[Sociology Hub]].
Sociology is the study of how social structures produce outcomes that no individual chose. That formulation is the whole reason the discipline earns a large folder in a knowledge base about political movements: it supplies the vocabulary for describing coordinated behaviour without positing coordination.
This matters more than it sounds. The commonest failure in political analysis is to read a pattern as a plan. Sociology's central move is that durable patterns arise from institutions, incentives, norms and networks — which means a movement can behave with apparent strategic coherence while nobody is directing it. The vault leans on this constantly, and it is the discipline that keeps the analysis on the near side of conspiracy thinking.
Three tools do most of the work here.
**Elite theory** — the tradition from Mosca and Pareto through C. Wright Mills's *The Power Elite* — holds that organised minorities rule disorganised majorities in every regime type, democracies included. It is the frame behind the vault's mapping of interlocking boards, donor networks and the revolving door, and it has a sharp edge worth keeping: it applies to elites the analyst likes as well as to those he doesn't.
**Hegemony**, from Gramsci, explains rule that does not feel like rule — dominance secured through the ordinary machinery of common sense rather than through force. It is the concept that makes media ownership a power question rather than a business question, and it connects directly to [[Media Theory]].
**Legitimacy and charismatic authority**, from Weber, explain why obedience persists when performance does not justify it, and why a leader whose authority is personal rather than institutional cannot be argued down with evidence about outcomes.
One caution the vault holds to: structural explanation is not exculpation. Saying an outcome was produced by institutional arrangement rather than individual malice describes the mechanism; it does not settle who is responsible for maintaining the arrangement.
