# Greenhouse Effect
The greenhouse effect is the mechanism by which certain atmospheric gases trap outgoing infrared radiation, warming Earth's surface above what it would be otherwise. It is not controversial physics — the basic mechanism was described by Joseph Fourier in 1824, experimentally demonstrated by Eunice Newton Foote in 1856 and John Tyndall in 1859, and quantified by Svante Arrhenius in 1896. The underlying physics (molecular absorption of infrared radiation) is the same physics used in infrared spectroscopy, heat-seeking missiles, and thermal imaging — it is not speculative.
## The Mechanism
Earth receives energy from the sun primarily as visible light and near-infrared radiation. The atmosphere is largely transparent to these wavelengths — sunlight passes through and warms the surface. The warmed surface radiates energy back outward as longer-wavelength infrared radiation (heat). Greenhouse gases — primarily water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and ozone — absorb specific wavelengths of this outgoing infrared radiation and re-emit it in all directions, including back toward the surface. This trapping effect warms the surface beyond what incoming solar energy alone would produce.
Without any greenhouse effect, Earth's average surface temperature would be roughly -18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees Fahrenheit) — frozen solid. The natural greenhouse effect warms it to roughly +15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit), a 33-degree difference that makes liquid water, and therefore life, possible. The greenhouse effect is not the problem. The enhanced greenhouse effect — additional warming from human-added greenhouse gases — is.
## Venus as Runaway Example
Venus demonstrates what happens when the greenhouse effect runs to an extreme. Venus has a thick atmosphere of roughly 96% CO2, producing a surface temperature of about 465 degrees Celsius (869 degrees Fahrenheit) — hot enough to melt lead, and hotter than Mercury despite being nearly twice as far from the sun. Venus is the planetary proof of concept: atmospheric composition determines surface temperature, and CO2 is an extremely effective greenhouse gas.
Earth is not heading for Venus-level warming — the scenarios are physically different. But Venus demonstrates that the greenhouse mechanism is real, powerful, and can dominate a planet's surface conditions.
## The Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
Human activities, primarily fossil fuel combustion (see [[Carbon Cycle]] and Oxidation-Reduction), have increased atmospheric CO2 from pre-industrial levels of roughly 280 ppm to over 425 ppm. Methane concentrations have more than doubled. These increases strengthen the greenhouse effect, trapping more outgoing infrared radiation and warming the surface.
The energy imbalance is measurable: Earth is currently absorbing roughly 1 watt per square meter more energy than it radiates to space. This imbalance drives warming of the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, and ice. The warming is observed in surface temperature records, ocean heat content measurements, melting ice sheets, rising sea levels, retreating glaciers, and shifting ecological ranges.
The physics is deterministic: more CO2 means more infrared absorption means more warming. The only scientific questions are how much warming per unit of CO2 increase (climate sensitivity — well-constrained to roughly 2.5-4 degrees Celsius per doubling of CO2) and how fast the warming manifests given ocean thermal inertia. The basic direction is not in scientific dispute.
## RWKB Angle: The Mechanism Deniers Must Deny
The greenhouse effect is the specific physical mechanism that [[Climate Change Denialism]] must deny or distort. The denial strategies target different parts of the causal chain:
**"It's just a theory."** This rhetorical move (also used against [[Evolution]]) conflates the colloquial meaning of "theory" (guess) with the scientific meaning (well-substantiated explanation). The greenhouse effect is as well-established as germ theory or gravitational theory. The phrase "just a theory" is a [[Loaded Language]] technique that exploits public misunderstanding of scientific terminology.
**"Water vapor is the main greenhouse gas."** True — water vapor accounts for the largest share of the natural greenhouse effect. But water vapor is a feedback, not a forcing. Its atmospheric concentration is determined by temperature: warmer air holds more water vapor, which causes more warming (a positive feedback loop). CO2 is the forcing — the knob humans are turning. Adding CO2 warms the surface, which increases water vapor, which amplifies the warming. Citing water vapor as a reason to dismiss CO2 is backwards.
**"CO2 is a tiny fraction of the atmosphere."** True — CO2 is roughly 0.04% of the atmosphere. But concentration and effect are not proportional in a simple way. A tiny amount of cyanide in water is lethal; a tiny amount of ozone in the stratosphere blocks UV radiation. The relevant question is not what fraction of the atmosphere CO2 represents but how effectively it absorbs infrared radiation at specific wavelengths — and the answer, established by laboratory spectroscopy since the 1850s, is very effectively.
**"Scientists can't agree."** They can and do. The scientific consensus on human-caused warming — endorsed by every major national academy of sciences, every relevant professional society, and reflected in thousands of peer-reviewed papers — is as strong as any consensus in modern science. The illusion of disagreement is manufactured by organizations like the [[Heartland Institute]], which fund a small number of contrarian voices and amplify them through media outlets (→ [[Disinformation]]).
The fossil fuel industry's internal documents, where available, show that companies understood the greenhouse effect and its implications for their products decades ago — paralleling the tobacco industry's internal acceptance of the smoking-cancer link while publicly manufacturing doubt (→ [[Merchants of Doubt]]).
