# Narcissism Hub
> [!info] Short version
> New to the topic? [[Narcissism]] is the one-page orientation: the working definition, the key distinctions, and where to go next. This hub is the full map.
Narcissism is one of the most-discussed and least-precisely-used concepts in contemporary political analysis. This subject hub aims to keep the clinical literature, the personality-psychology literature, and the popular usage clearly distinguished.
## Three usage registers
**1. Clinical (DSM-5-TR Narcissistic Personality Disorder).** A specific diagnosis with criteria: grandiosity, need for admiration, lack of empathy, exploitative interpersonal style, etc. Lifetime prevalence ~1-6%. The Goldwater Rule (APA ethics) prohibits psychiatrists from publicly diagnosing public figures they haven't examined — much of the popular "Trump has NPD" discourse violates this norm; the *Dangerous Case* contributors argue the "duty to warn" supersedes it. Contested.
**2. Personality-psychology dimensional.** Narcissism as a continuous trait, not a yes/no disorder. Two factors typically extracted: *grandiose narcissism* (assertive, exhibitionist, dominant) and *vulnerable narcissism* (hypersensitive, defensive, hostile). Measured by NPI (Narcissistic Personality Inventory) and successors.
**3. Cultural / sociological.** Lasch's *The Culture of Narcissism* (1979) — narcissism as a societal-character diagnosis, not an individual one. Argues late-capitalist consumer culture produces a narcissistic personality structure as norm.
## Cluster B Personality Disorders
→ **Full entry:** [[Cluster B Personality Disorders]]
The DSM groups four personality disorders in "Cluster B" (dramatic/erratic):
- **Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD)** — disregard for/violation of others' rights
- **Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)** — instability of relationships, self-image, affect
- **Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD)** — excessive emotionality, attention-seeking
- **Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)** — grandiosity, need for admiration, lack of empathy
These overlap and frequently co-occur. Worth distinguishing because political-analysis uses "narcissism" loosely for what is sometimes more precisely ASPD or a mix.
## Malignant Narcissism
→ **Full entry:** [[Malignant Narcissism]]
Coined by **Erich Fromm** (*The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness*, 1973), formalized by **Otto Kernberg**. Defined as a syndrome combining:
1. Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD)
2. Antisocial features
3. Paranoid features
4. Ego-syntonic aggression / sadism
Kernberg considered malignant narcissism the personality structure of "evil" — historical and contemporary tyrants and cult leaders often map onto this profile. The bridge to [[Cults]] (cult leader pathology) and [[Authoritarianism]] (authoritarian personality).
## Dark Triad and Dark Tetrad
→ **Full entry:** [[Dark Triad]]
Personality-psychology research (Paulhus & Williams, 2002) identified three socially malevolent traits as a cluster:
- **Narcissism** (grandiose self-focus)
- **Machiavellianism** (manipulation, cynical worldview)
- **Psychopathy** (impulsivity, callousness)
Buckels et al. (2013) added **everyday sadism** as a fourth, making the Dark Tetrad. Predicts a wide range of antisocial behavior including online trolling, exploitative leadership, and aggressive political behavior.
## Right-wing relevance for this vault
Three application points:
- **Trump psychological analysis** — *The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump* (Lee et al., 2017) and Mary Trump's *Too Much and Never Enough* (2020) apply the malignant-narcissism frame
- **Cult leader pathology** — heavy overlap with [[Cults]]; many high-control-group founders show malignant-narcissism patterns
- **Authoritarian leadership** — connects to [[Authoritarianism]]; the disposition that *seeks* authoritarian power often differs from the disposition that *follows* it (Fromm distinguished "the sadist" from "the masochist" in *[[Escape from Freedom]]*)
## Narcissistic-abuse vocabulary (2026-05-19 buildout)
The 2026-05-19 same-day Disinformation Lexicon buildout produced substantial narcissistic-abuse and authoritarian-leader-figure analytical-vocabulary across this folder and adjacent ones. The entries are organized into four sub-clusters:
### Defense mechanisms (foundational clinical-psychology constructs)
- [[Splitting]] — Klein 1946 / Kernberg 1975; the all-good / all-bad defense; foundational diagnostic feature of borderline-level personality organization; group-level political-discourse application
- Malignant Envy — Klein 1957 *Envy and Gratitude*; *destructive* (not acquisitive) envy; Kernberg malignant-narcissism foundational component; analytical framework for zero-sum political-coalition dynamics
### Supply-and-rage dynamics (Kohut self-psychology + Fenichel object-relations)
- [[Narcissistic Supply]] — Fenichel 1945; the ongoing external-input narcissistic individuals require to maintain grandiose self-image; primary/secondary supply distinction; rally / Twitter / [[Truth Social]] as supply infrastructure
- [[Narcissistic Rage]] — Kohut 1972; disproportionate-and-sustained fury response to narcissistic injury; documented application to Trump-administration case-record and comparative authoritarian-leader cases (Putin, Kim Jong Un, Bolsonaro, Erdogan)
### Manipulation / response patterns (abuse-dynamics applied to political analysis)
- Flying Monkeys — Third-party enabler-figures; four-category awareness-typology; documented application to authoritarian-leader inner-circle dynamics + coordinated online-harassment infrastructure + religious-cult organization enforcement
- Stonewalling — Gottman *Four Horsemen*; withdrawal-as-control communication pattern; documented application to authoritarian-leader-figure communication-control patterns + institutional-amplification problem at head-of-state scale
- Playing the Victim — Manipulation tactic in which substantive-perpetrator repositions as victim; DARVO third-step extension; documented contemporary Trump-administration grievance-politics infrastructure; aggrieved-entitlement convergence
### Cross-domain clinical-and-political entries
- [[Tarasoff Rule]] — 1976 California clinical-legal duty-to-warn doctrine; contemporary tension with the Goldwater Rule in Trump-era psychiatric-assessment-of-public-figures discourse
- [[DARVO]] — Freyd 1997; the Deny-Attack-Reverse-Victim-and-Offender four-step pattern; rhetorical-deployment in /Terminology/Disinformation/ (Trump, Kavanaugh, authoritarian-leader-response cases)
- [[Gaslighting]] — Hamilton 1938 → Stern 2007 → Duca 2016 political-transfer → Merriam-Webster 2022 Word of the Year; reality-undermining as five-feature diagnostic mechanism
For the full alphabetical view including cross-domain entries from /Terminology/Disinformation/, /Concepts/, /Subjects/[[Decision Science]]/Cognitive Biases/, /Terminology/Cults/, /Organizations/, /Media/Outlets/, /Events/, and /Conspiracy Theories/, see [[Disinformation Lexicon]] — the canonical MOC that cross-links all entries from the 2026-05-19 buildout.
## Religion, cults, and the follower side
- [[Narcissism and Religious Authoritarianism]] — synthesis of the argument that religious authoritarian conditioning and pathological narcissism form a single reinforcing system: the leader supplies followers' [[Collective Narcissism]], and prior religious formation supplies the leader with an audience already trained in submission and binary moral sorting. Compiled primarily from [[Nick Carmody]]; flagged throughout as public-intellectual analysis rather than peer-reviewed research, with the empirical anchors named.
- [[Nick Carmody]] — psychotherapist and attorney (JD, MS Psych) writing at the seam between clinical narcissism, cult dynamics, and religious-nationalist politics
