# Mathematics and Power Hub This is the site's mathematics subject — not the discipline itself, but what is done with it. Its focus is the political use of quantification. The organizing claim: **quantification is a transfer of authority.** Putting a number on something moves the argument out of the domain where ordinary people feel entitled to disagree and into a domain where objecting requires credentials. That transfer is sometimes legitimate and often engineered. The pattern this branch tracks is the engineered case — where mathematical form is imported precisely because it forecloses argument, and where the substantive content is doing much less work than the notation suggests. ## The recurring mechanisms **Existence proofs sold as measurements.** The [[Laffer Curve]] establishes that a revenue-maximizing tax rate exists somewhere. It has been deployed for four decades as though it established where. This is the master pattern: a real theorem with no parameters, used as though it had parameters. **Assumption laundering inside a model.** Dynamic scoring at the [[Congressional Budget Office]] and the Joint Committee on Taxation embeds contested macroeconomic elasticities inside a modeling apparatus, then reports the output as arithmetic. The politics moved from the conclusion to the input, where it is harder to see and harder to contest. **Optimization against a political objective.** Modern [[Gerrymandering]] is a solver run over a combinatorial space with a partisan objective function. So is precision voter targeting, so is ad delivery, so is [[Algorithmic Bias]] in risk scoring — the objective is chosen by someone, and the choice is where the politics lives. **Metrics that become targets.** Goodhart's dynamic: once a number is used for control, the number stops measuring what it measured. Applies to crime statistics, school testing, agency performance metrics, and every quantified accountability regime. **Counterfeit rigor.** Benford's-law misapplication to vote counts, "statistically impossible" turnout claims, curve-fitting to precinct returns, [[Numerology]] and gematria in [[QAnon]] decoding. These borrow the appearance of quantitative argument with none of the structure, and they work because the audience cannot tell the difference — which is itself an argument for this branch existing. **Selective precision.** Reporting a point estimate without its interval, a poll without its margin, a projection without its assumptions. See Polling and Misunderstanding Statistics. ## The branch — built 2026-08-11 All 32 leaf pages below are built. This branch is complete as a first pass. ### Districting and representation - [[The Mathematics of Redistricting]] — the spine: redistricting as combinatorial optimization, and what the courts did with it - [[The Efficiency Gap]] — the metric that reached the Supreme Court and why it failed - [[District Compactness Measures]] — thirty-odd geometric ratios that disagree with each other - [[Markov Chain Ensemble Methods]] — sampling the space of legal maps to detect outliers - [[Packing and Cracking]] — the two elementary operations, and why they are complements - [[Wasted Votes]] — the accounting primitive underneath every gerrymandering metric - [[Congressional Apportionment Mathematics]] — Huntington-Hill, the Alabama paradox, the Balinski-Young impossibility ### Polling and forecasting - [[Likely-Voter Models]] — the biggest hidden lever in any poll - [[Poll Aggregation]] — why averaging cannot fix correlated error - [[Herding in Polling]] — the incentive to hug consensus, and its detectable statistical fingerprint - [[Reading Probabilistic Forecasts]] — what a 30% forecast actually claims ### Fiscal and economic math - [[Rate Versus Level]] — the derivative-vs-integral confusion behind most fiscal deception - [[Dynamic Scoring]] — where the tax-cut argument went when it left public view - [[CBO Baselines and Scoring Windows]] — the counterfactual and the horizon, both chosen - [[The Laffer Curve as Existence Proof]] — a real theorem carrying weight it cannot bear - [[Index Choice and Chained CPI]] — legislating benefit cuts by picking an index - [[Discount Rates as Policy Choices]] — an ethical parameter in a financial costume - [[GDP as a Constructed Measure]] — what the headline number omits by design ### Risk, actuarial, and algorithmic - [[Actuarial Science and Risk Classification]] — the oldest applied probability and the oldest algorithmic sorting - [[Statistical Discrimination]] — discrimination requiring no animus, and the loop that makes it true - [[Credit Scoring]] — the template every later scoring system inherited - [[Predictive Policing]] — a model that predicts its own deployment - [[Criminal Risk Assessment Instruments]] — the dispute that produced the impossibility results - [[Fairness Impossibility Results]] — the proof that someone must be wronged, and a demand that we say who - [[The Value of a Statistical Life]] — the parameter that made regulation defensible, set to zero in 2026 ### Counterfeit quantification - [[Benford's Law and Election-Fraud Claims]] — a real technique imported where its assumptions fail - [[Statistical Impossibility Arguments]] — likelihood claims presented without a denominator - [[Curve-Fitting and Cherry-Picked Windows]] — true numbers, manufactured conclusions - [[Gematria]] — a method that never fails to find a pattern - [[Pseudo-Precision as Rhetoric]] — digits as a persuasion device - [[Probability Distribution]] — one average standing in for a skewed distribution, and the inequality it hides ### Quantification as governance - [[Metric Capture]] — managing the number instead of the thing - [[The Politics of Official Statistics]] — measurement independence, and what August 2025 broke > [!note] Scope changes from the skeleton plan > Four originally-planned pages were dropped rather than built, because the vault already covers them and duplicating would violate the no-duplication rule: **Margin of Error Abuse** (covered by Margin of Error plus [[Likely-Voter Models]]), **Rucho and Justiciability** (covered by [[Rucho v. Common Cause]] and inside [[The Mathematics of Redistricting]]), **Attacks on Statistical Agencies** (covered by [[BLS Data Integrity Crisis]]; the mechanism is in [[The Politics of Official Statistics]]), and **Cost-Benefit Analysis** as a standalone (split across [[Discount Rates as Policy Choices]] and [[The Value of a Statistical Life]], which is where the contested parameters actually live). ## Existing vault links [[Gerrymandering]] · [[Laffer Curve]] · [[Congressional Budget Office]] · [[Algorithmic Bias]] · [[Surveillance Capitalism]] · Polling · Statistics · Statistical Significance · P-value · Misunderstanding Statistics · Signal vs Noise · [[Risk vs Uncertainty]] · [[Fat Tails]] · Power Law Distribution · [[QAnon]] · [[Numerology]] · [[Sacred Geometry]] · [[Manufacturing Doubt]] · [[Framing]] · [[Information Warfare Hub]] · [[Private Equity]] · [[Derivatives]] · [[The Algebra of Resistance]] · [[Technologists and Mathematicians]]
