# Vatnik
A political slur — used across Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and the Baltic languages — for a blindly patriotic, jingoistic follower of Russian state propaganda. A *vatnik* (Russian: ватник) is someone who reflexively defends the Kremlin line, parrots official talking points, and treats imperial-Russian grievance as self-evident truth. The collective noun *vata* ("cotton wool / wadding") names the phenomenon in the aggregate.
## Etymology
The word literally means a cheap, **cotton-padded quilted jacket** — Soviet-era workwear and Gulag-issue clothing, still seen in rural areas. The metaphor works on two levels: the jacket evokes a backward, impoverished, unreflective Soviet nostalgia, and "cotton wool for brains" implies someone stuffed with padding rather than capable of independent thought (close to the English "cotton between the ears").
The political usage comes from an **internet meme first spread by the artist Anton Chadsky on VKontakte around 2011**. Chadsky's cartoon depicted a square-faced character literally made of padded-jacket material and sporting a black eye — a blindly patriotic, none-too-bright jingoist who keeps insisting on Russia's greatness even while being beaten. The meme spread widely after the **Russo-Ukrainian War began in 2014**, becoming a standard term of derision for pro-Putin online commenters during and after the annexation of Crimea and the full-scale 2022 invasion.
## How it functions in information warfare
Vatnik names a specific node in the Russian information ecosystem: not the state broadcaster or the troll-farm operator, but the *true believer and volunteer amplifier* — the ordinary person (or the account performing as one) who recirculates [[Kremlin Disinformation]] as sincere conviction. This layer is strategically valuable because it launders top-down messaging into apparently grassroots sentiment, blurring the line between paid operations (see [[Active Measures]], troll farms) and authentic popular support. The vatnik worldview maps closely onto the imperial-restorationist ideology of [[Russkii Mir]] ("Russian World") and the older current of [[Pan-Slavism]].
The term is contested. Pro-Kremlin propagandists have worked to **redefine or reclaim** *vatnik* — recasting it from an insult into a badge of patriotic honor — a documented case of an opponent's pejorative being inverted into in-group identity, which complicates its use as a neutral analytic label. (Its rough mirror-image slur, applied in the other direction, is *ukrop*.)
## Distinct from neighbors
- **[[Russkii Mir]]** — the *ideology* (imperial "Russian World"); vatnik is the *person* who has internalized it.
- **Troll / troll farm** — paid or organized operatives; a vatnik may be a sincere volunteer, an organic believer, or an operative performing sincerity — the ambiguity is the point.
- **NPC (online insult)** — the Western analog of "thoughtlessly repeats programming"; vatnik is its Russia-specific, propaganda-loaded cousin.
- **Ukrop** — the inverted counterpart slur aimed at Ukrainian patriots.
