# Fifth Generation Warfare
**Fifth Generation Warfare (5GW)** is a contested extension of the [[Fourth Generation Warfare]] framework, articulated most fully in Daniel H. Abbott's 2010 *The Handbook of 5GW*. Where 4GW is about non-state networks targeting an opponent's political will, 5GW's premise is to **wage war on the context of battle itself** — changing the terrain so completely that adversaries don't even recognize a conflict is underway. In [[Dave Troy]]'s "[[The Big History Behind January 6th]]" Coda, 5GW is the operating logic of the "sovereign individual" agenda.
## The core move
5GW synthesizes and extends [[John Boyd]]'s [[OODA Loop]] and [[William S. Lind]]'s 4GW. Its distinctive claim: rather than contest an opponent's entrenched position, **create an entirely new context** that advantages early adopters and that the adversary is structurally unequipped to perceive or counter until irreversible shifts have already happened.
In this framing:
- Communication is near-instant; hierarchy is discarded for networked insurgency.
- **Every participant is a combatant**, actively or passively; ordinary people's reactions can be weaponized at scale.
- It is a framework for *continuous, total* warfare with no clear front, enemy, or end.
## Troy's application
Troy argues 5GW is being deployed in service of the [[The Sovereign Individual]] agenda — using cryptocurrency, NFTs, and other "crazy"-seeming domains as arenas nation-states can't yet regulate. He points to Q1 2021 events — the GameStop short-squeeze episode, dollar-hegemony challenges, and celebrity crypto "shilling" — as 5GW in action: **hacking mass perception of reality** faster than institutions can respond. The endgame he warns about is [[State Capture]]: subverting democratic mechanisms until a polity becomes a [[Plutocracy]].
> [!note] Doctrine vs. buzzword
> Like 4GW, "5GW" is more an evocative framework than a rigorous military doctrine; critics see it as under-defined. Its value here is descriptive — naming a style of networked, perception-targeting conflict — not as an established theory of war.
