# World History Hub This folder collects the vault's **country and regional histories** — the deep-background files on the foreign nations that the American right organizes itself around, admires, fears, funds, or fights. It is a geographic umbrella, not a thematic one: each sub-folder is the long story of a *place*, built far enough back that the present-day headline makes sense. The vault's *thematic* histories — the history of science, of technology, of the U.S. intelligence community, of music in politics — live one level up at the `/Subjects/History/` root, because they are histories of subjects rather than of countries. Why does a knowledge base on the American right need the modern history of China, Russia, Iran, or Canada? Because the post-2016 right is defined as much by its foreign reference points as by its domestic program. Each of these national histories does a specific kind of work in the right-wing imagination: - **The organizing enemy.** [[Chinese History Hub]] tracks the one adversary that fuses the hawk and the populist — the great-power rival, the "Maoism" rhetorical weapon, the trade war, and the collapse of the engagement consensus that is the founding grievance of the new right's foreign policy. - **The admired strongman.** [[Russian History Hub]] follows the arc from the Soviet collapse to [[Vladimir Putin]]'s consolidation — the model of muscular, traditionalist, anti-woke authoritarianism that a faction of the American right has come to defend rather than contain. - **The flashpoint.** [[Ukrainian History Hub]] is the war that split the American right down the middle, separating the Reaganite hawks from the "America First" non-interventionists in real time. - **The theocratic foil.** [[Iranian History Hub]] holds the 1953 coup, the 1979 revolution, and the long shadow of regime-change politics that runs from the neoconservative project through to the present MOU diplomacy. - **The forever-war template.** [[Iraqi History Hub]] is the war that fractured the right's foreign-policy consensus a generation before Ukraine did — the WMD deception, the occupation, and the realignment it set in motion. - **The sectarian map.** [[Lebanese History Hub]] anchors the Levant cluster — the [[Ottoman Empire]], the [[Sykes-Picot Agreement]], [[Confessionalism]], and the [[Sunni vs. Shia]] divide that frames how the right reads the whole region. - **The mirror to the north.** [[Canadian History Hub]] is the parallel-universe case: a G7 democracy with its own populist lineage running from the [[Reform Party of Canada]] to today's [[Conservative Party of Canada]], its own trucker-convoy flashpoint, and its own culture-war exports — close enough to read as a preview or a warning, depending on which side is looking. - **The answer that worked.** [[Greek History Hub]] holds both halves of the country the far right claims as its heritage: the antiquity it appropriates, and the modern state that convicted its own neo-Nazi party **as a criminal organization** — upheld on appeal in March 2026. Also the only postwar Western European military dictatorship, whose leaders died in prison, and the 2015 referendum that changed nothing. - **The completed experiment.** [[Italian History Hub]] is the only country here where the story finished: a party in unbroken organizational descent from Mussolini's republic repudiated its origins in 1995, entered government, and has run the country since 2022 as a G7 and NATO partner. Italy is where the vault gets to see what is on the other side of normalization — including the bill, now being collected by a rival further right. - **The source code.** [[French History Hub]] is where the vocabulary was written: *metapolitics*, *ethnopluralism*, the *Great Replacement*, the *real country* against the *legal country*. Every one has a French author and a French date, and each was built after a defeat — Dreyfus, Vichy, Algeria, 1968. It is also the longest-running experiment in normalizing a pariah party, with the vote shares recorded at every step. - **The sovereignty question.** [[Ethiopian History Hub]] asks what is logically prior to all of the above: not how a state handles its extremists, but who gets to be a state at all. Ethiopia won recognition by force at Adwa in 1896, watched it evaporate in 1935 while the League of Nations declined to enforce it, and is renegotiating the terms again in the 2020s. The argument the American right is now having about Ukraine was had, almost word for word, about Abyssinia in 1935. - **The word, and the country underneath it.** [[Venezuelan History Hub]] is the most-used foreign noun in American right-wing argument — the socialism warning, the stolen-election conspiracy, the deportation predicate — and none of the three uses requires knowing anything about Venezuela. It is also where the United States removed a head of state by force in January 2026 and his own vice president succeeded him without the ruling party losing a ministry: the decapitation theory of regime change, run cleanly, with a result. - **The prototype, and the handover.** [[Hungarian History Hub]] is the model the American right studied, staged its flagship conference in, and — as the incoming government disclosed — was paid to celebrate. It is also the only country here where the illiberal machine was built, exported, defeated at the ballot box in April 2026, and then **inherited intact** by the people who beat it. Nothing else in the folder shows what that costs. - **The completed transit.** [[Israeli History Hub]] is where a political tradition went from parliamentary disqualification as racist, and outlawing as terrorist, to a cabinet seat in a single generation — starting in Brooklyn. It is also the vault's minimal-checks control case: a working democracy with no written constitution, no upper house and no federalism. - **The organising border.** [[Mexican History Hub]] is the country the American right's immigration, drug, and trade politics are built against — the border that launched the wall, the cartel war that justifies the surveillance state, the trade relationship that NAFTA created and "America First" disrupted, and the 71-year PRI hegemony that is the Western Hemisphere's definitive one-party-state case study. --- ## The country histories - [[Canadian History Hub]] — Confederation to the [[Freedom Convoy]]; the Reform-Conservative lineage, Quebec, and Canada as both model and cautionary tale for the American right - [[Chinese History Hub]] — 1911 to the present; the organizing enemy of the new right - [[Iranian History Hub]] — coup, revolution, and the regime-change debate - [[Iraqi History Hub]] — the war that broke the right's foreign-policy consensus - [[Lebanese History Hub]] — the Levant, sectarianism, and the post-Ottoman settlement - [[Russian History Hub]] — Soviet collapse to Putin; the admired-authoritarian model - [[Ukrainian History Hub]] — the war that split "America First" from the hawks - [[Congolese History Hub]] — Congo/DRC: extraction as government, 1885 to present - [[Mexican History Hub]] — the organising border: revolution, PRI, NAFTA, cartels, and the immigration politics they produce - [[Greek History Hub]] — Athens to Golden Dawn; the contested inheritance and the prosecution that worked - [[Italian History Hub]] — the March on Rome to Meloni; fascism's birthplace and the only finished run of the normalization playbook - [[French History Hub]] — Dreyfus to the Le Pen appeal; where the far right's vocabulary is written and exported - [[German History Hub]] — Weimar to the AfD; the origin of the analogy and the machinery built to prevent a recurrence - [[British History Hub]] — empire, Thatcher, Brexit, and the 2026 Labour collapse; the vault's forward observation post - [[Indian History Hub]] — Hindutva, the RSS, and the limits of tariff leverage against a country with options - [[Japanese History Hub]] — Article 9, the Takaichi supermajority, and the China crisis - [[South African History Hub]] — apartheid, the transition, and the "white genocide" narrative written into US refugee law - [[Venezuelan History Hub]] — the petrostate that wrote the rules, the pact that excluded everyone, the collapse with a mechanism, and the intervention that changed the ruler and not the regime - [[Hungarian History Hub]] — Trianon to the 2026 handover; the illiberal prototype, its export, and what its defeat left standing - [[Israeli History Hub]] — Balfour to the October 2026 election; Revisionist Zionism, Kahanism, and the country the American right argues about with itself - [[Ethiopian History Hub]] — Adwa to the Tigray war; sovereignty won, voided and renegotiated, and the Ethiopia that lives in the Black diaspora's political imagination --- ## How this folder is scoped **In scope:** the modern political history of a nation or region, built deep enough to explain its place in current right-wing discourse. New country histories are added as sub-folders here, each anchored by its own MOC or Hub page following the **MOC-in-folder** pattern. **Out of scope (lives at `/Subjects/History/` root):** thematic histories that cross national borders — [[Tech History Hub]], [[History of Science Hub]], [[US Intelligence History Hub]], and [[Music in Politics Hub]] — plus sub-national American histories that are not yet their own discipline. > [!tip] Cross-cutting companion > The comparative, biographical roster of the strongmen who ran these countries — organized by regime family rather than geography — lives with the authoritarianism subject at [[Dictators in World History Hub]]. It draws on the country histories here but is filed there to keep this folder geographically scoped. > [!note] Reader map > This is a section hub. It does not duplicate the country MOCs; it routes to them. Each country folder carries its own narrative spine and stub roster.
