# History of Science Hub
This hub organizes the RWKB's coverage of the history of science — not as a triumphalist march of progress, but as a contested, political, and deeply human enterprise. Science is the most powerful method humanity has developed for understanding the natural world, and the [[Scientific Method]] works. But *who* gets to do science, *what* questions get funded, *whose* findings get credited, and *how* scientific authority gets wielded in politics are questions that the history of science forces us to confront. Every contemporary fight documented in this vault — over [[Climate Science]], [[mRNA Vaccines]], [[Evolution]], [[Gain-of-Function Research]] — is shaped by this history.
The section is organized into two clusters: **Eras**, which trace the major periods of scientific development from the 16th century forward, and **Thematic Arcs**, which cut across those periods to reveal recurring patterns of power, suppression, and institutional failure that remain active today.

## Eras
These pages trace the chronological development of scientific practice and its relationship to political power, from the overthrow of Aristotelian cosmology to the molecular revolution.
### [[The Scientific Revolution]]
The foundational rupture — [[Galileo Galilei]]'s confrontation with the Church, the development of [[Falsifiability]] as an epistemic standard, and the emergence of empirical inquiry as an alternative to scholastic authority. The tensions established here between science and religious authority run directly through [[Science and Religion in America]] and the modern [[Intelligent Design]] movement promoted by the [[Discovery Institute]] and the [[Institute for Creation Research]].
### [[Enlightenment Science]]
The institutionalization of scientific practice: royal academies, learned societies, and the ideology of rational progress. The era of Linnaeus's taxonomy, Lavoisier's Chemistry, and the embedding of scientific reasoning into Philosophy of Science and political theory. But also the era when racial classification was formalized into the systems that would produce [[Scientific Racism]] and [[Eugenics]].
### [[Industrial Revolution and Science]]
The marriage of scientific knowledge to industrial production — Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, and the transformation of Chemistry from a theoretical pursuit into an engine of economic growth. [[Charles Darwin]] and the theory of [[Evolution]] by natural selection emerge in this period, as do the social Darwinist ideologies that weaponized evolutionary theory into justifications for inequality and imperial domination. The origins of the [[Fossil Fuel Industry and Climate]] relationship are here.
### [[The Manhattan Project]]
The moment science became a matter of existential geopolitics. The development of atomic weapons during [[World War II]], the moral crisis of Nuclear Physics applied to mass destruction, and the creation of the military-scientific-industrial complex that shaped the [[Cold War]]. [[Operation Paperclip]] and [[Wernher von Braun]]'s transition from Nazi rocketry to [[NASA]] illustrate the moral compromises that defined postwar science. The [[Department of Energy]] and [[Department of Defense]] became permanent patrons of scientific research, entangling science with the [[Military-Industrial Complex]] and the [[Defense Tech Ecosystem]].
### [[The Space Race]]
The [[Cold War]] competition between the United States and the [[Soviet Union]] that produced [[Sputnik]], the Apollo program, and the institutional infrastructure of [[NASA]]. [[Space Exploration]] became a proxy for ideological superiority. The [[Space Hub]] and Physics research that emerged — from Edwin Hubble's legacy to [[Vera Rubin]]'s rotation curves revealing Dark Matter and Dark Energy — reshaped our understanding of the universe. The era also produced the Astronomy Education and Public Literacy tradition of [[Carl Sagan]] and later Neil deGrasse Tyson.
### [[The Green Revolution]]
The transformation of global agriculture through high-yield crop varieties, synthetic fertilizers, and irrigation — a scientific achievement that fed billions but also created dependencies on petrochemical inputs, undermined traditional farming knowledge, and concentrated agricultural power in multinational corporations. Connects directly to [[Soil and Agriculture]], Ecology, and the broader tension between [[Genetics]]-driven technological solutions and the ecological costs those solutions impose. The [[Department of Agriculture]] was a central player.
### [[The Genomic Revolution]]
The era of DNA sequencing, CRISPR, and the molecular understanding of [[Biology]] that is reshaping medicine, agriculture, and our understanding of [[Evolution]]. Nucleic Acids and the Central Dogma, Proteins and Enzymes, Cell Theory, and [[Genetics]] converge here. Also the era of the [[Replication Crisis]], the commercialization of genomic data, and new ethical frontiers that echo the dilemmas of [[Eugenics]]. The [[NIH]], [[FDA]], and [[CDC]] are all implicated in how genomic science is governed.

## Thematic Arcs
These pages trace patterns that cut across eras — recurring dynamics of suppression, exploitation, and institutional failure that connect the 17th century to today's political fights.
### [[The Tobacco Strategy]]
The template for modern [[Science Denial]]: how the tobacco industry pioneered the techniques of [[Manufacturing Doubt]], funded contrarian research, attacked credible scientists, and delayed regulation for decades while millions died. The playbook was inherited by the [[Fossil Fuel Industry and Climate]], documented in [[Merchants of Doubt]], and analyzed in [[The Republican War on Science]]. The [[Heartland Institute]], [[Cato Institute]], and [[Koch Network]] all trace tactical lineage to Big Tobacco's strategy. Connects to [[Regulatory Capture]], [[Dark Money]], [[Astroturfing]], and [[The Climate Denial Machine]].
### [[Science and Religion in America]]
The ongoing tension between scientific authority and religious authority in American public life — from the [[Scopes Trial]] through [[Intelligent Design]] to contemporary [[Christian Nationalism]] and [[Dominionism]]. The [[Discovery Institute]]'s "Wedge Strategy," the [[Institute for Creation Research]]'s influence on textbook standards, the [[Family Research Council]]'s opposition to stem cell research, and [[Young Earth Creationism]]'s persistence despite overwhelming evidence for [[Evolution]], Geologic Time Scale, and The History of Cosmology. The fight is ultimately about whether [[Epistemology]] is grounded in evidence or revelation.
### [[Science Funding in America]]
How the structure of research funding shapes what science gets done and what gets ignored. From [[Vannevar Bush]]'s postwar vision of government-funded basic research to the contemporary defunding of the [[EPA]], [[NIH]], and [[Office of Science and Technology Policy]]. The [[Heritage Foundation]], [[Manhattan Institute]], and the broader [[Koch Network]] have systematically worked to redirect or eliminate federal science funding that produces findings inconvenient to their economic interests. [[Schedule F]] and [[DOGE]] threaten the civil service protections that insulate government scientists from political interference. The [[Department of Energy]], [[NASA]], [[Department of Defense]], and [[Department of Agriculture]] all depend on funding structures that are under active political assault.
### [[Tuskegee and the Ethics of Human Experimentation]]
The Tuskegee syphilis study (1932-1972) as the defining American case of scientific ethics violations — the deliberate withholding of treatment from Black men to study the natural progression of syphilis. Connects to the [[Eugenics]] movement, [[Scientific Racism]], and the broader history of medical experimentation on marginalized populations. The case destroyed trust in public health institutions among Black Americans, with consequences that echoed through the [[Anti-Vax Movement]], [[Anti-Vax Timeline]], and vaccine hesitancy during the [[COVID-19 Pandemic]]. Also connects to [[MK-Ultra]] as another episode of government-sponsored experimentation on unwitting subjects, and to the [[Flint Water Crisis]] as a modern instance of institutional indifference to the health of Black communities.
### [[Women and Credit in Science]]
The systematic erasure of women's contributions — from Rosalind Franklin's Photo 51 and DNA to [[Vera Rubin]]'s dark matter observations to Lise Meitner's explanation of nuclear fission to Emmy Noether's Conservation Laws theorem. The Matilda Effect as a structural phenomenon, not a series of individual oversights. Connects to Peer Review bias, the mythology of the lone genius, and the institutional gatekeeping that [[Marie Curie]] faced even as a two-time Nobel laureate. The same credit-assignment failures operate in [[Manufacturing Doubt]] and [[Regulatory Capture]]: who gets heard depends on power, not evidence.
### [[The Lysenko Affair]]
The definitive cautionary tale: how [[Joseph Stalin]]'s [[Soviet Union]] imposed ideologically correct pseudoscience on its entire biological establishment, destroyed the careers of legitimate geneticists, and caused agricultural catastrophes contributing to mass starvation. The mechanisms — political authority over scientific questions, [[Motivated Reasoning]] as institutional policy, persecution of dissenters, monopoly on information — are directly visible in contemporary [[Climate Change Denialism]], the [[MAHA]] movement's assault on [[FDA]] and [[CDC]] authority, creationist mandates in education, and the [[Environmental Deregulation Playbook]]. [[Propaganda]], [[Totalitarianism]], and [[Anti-Intellectualism]] converge here. The death of geneticist Nikolai Vavilov in a Soviet prison is a permanent monument to the cost of subordinating evidence to ideology.
### [[Science and Empire]]
How European colonial powers used science as a tool of domination: botanical extraction, [[Scientific Racism]], anthropometric measurement, colonial medicine, and cartographic control. The "objectivity" of science served imperial interests and produced the racial classification systems that fed [[Eugenics]], the [[Eugenics Timeline]], and [[White Supremacy]]. Astronomy and Empire and Indigenous and Non-Western Astronomy document how even the heavens were colonized. [[Charles Darwin]]'s voyage was funded by the Admiralty. [[Soil and Agriculture]] in colonized territories was reshaped for extraction. The lasting effects shape who gets to do science today, what counts as knowledge, and the global inequities in research funding and [[Intellectual Property]] that surfaced during the [[COVID-19 Pandemic]] debate over [[mRNA Vaccines]] access.

## Why This Matters for the RWKB
The Right Wing KB documents how political power distorts truth — in media, in policy, in institutions. The history of science is where those dynamics are sharpest, because science represents humanity's best tool for establishing what is actually true about the natural world. When the [[Heritage Foundation]] undermines [[Climate Science]], when [[Robert F. Kennedy Jr]] promotes [[Anti-Vax Movement]] claims against the [[CDC]], when [[Donald Trump]] proposes [[Schedule F]] to politicize government science agencies, when the [[Koch Network]] funds [[The Climate Denial Machine]] through [[Dark Money]] and [[Astroturfing]] — these are all chapters in a story that begins with the Inquisition's persecution of [[Galileo Galilei]], runs through Lysenko's destruction of Soviet [[Genetics]], and arrives at the present moment where [[Science Denial]] is a core component of right-wing political strategy.
The fourteen pages in this section provide the historical depth necessary to understand that [[Science Denial]] is not new, that the [[Manufacturing Doubt]] playbook has precedents stretching back centuries, and that the institutional safeguards protecting scientific integrity — Peer Review, academic freedom, federal funding independence, the norms of the [[Scientific Method]] — are fragile achievements that require active defense. The [[Merchants of Doubt]] and [[The Republican War on Science]] documented the modern phase. [[The Logic of Science Denial]] analyzed the epistemological mechanisms. These history pages show that the pattern is as old as science itself.
The RWKB's mission is to make these patterns visible. When a reader encounters the [[Climate Policy Sabotage Arc]] or the [[Environmental Deregulation Playbook]], they should be able to trace the tactics back through [[The Tobacco Strategy]] to the Lysenko Affair, and understand that the suppression of inconvenient science is not an aberration — it is a permanent temptation of power. The antidote is not cynicism about science but insistence on the institutional conditions that allow science to function: transparency, independence, reproducibility, and the protection of dissent. [[Karl Popper]]'s [[Falsifiability]], Paradigm Shift theory, and the Philosophy of Science tradition all provide the intellectual framework. These history pages provide the evidence.
