# Initial Jobless Claims
Weekly count of new unemployment-insurance filings — administrative data, not a survey, which makes it fast (Thursday mornings, covering the prior week) and hard to spin methodologically. The classic recession early-warning: claims turn up before the [[Unemployment Rate]] does. Political uses: weekly ammunition during downturns; in 2025–2026, the series watched for DOGE-driven federal-workforce layoffs showing up in DC-area filings.
