# The Big Lie
A propaganda tactic in which the *scale* and *repetition* of a falsehood do the work that evidence normally would: audiences come to assume no one could fabricate something so extreme without some basis in reality. Originally articulated by [[Adolf Hitler]] in *[[Mein Kampf]]* (1925) — *die große Lüge* — and later expanded by [[Joseph Goebbels]] into the German propaganda apparatus, the phrase reentered American political vocabulary after the 2020 election as the established term for [[Donald Trump]]'s ongoing claim that the election was stolen.
## Hitler's original formulation
In *Mein Kampf*, Hitler attributed the technique to Jewish opponents and the Marxist press while simultaneously articulating it as a usable doctrine. The crucial passage — that ordinary people "more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small one" because their own minds work in small lies and they cannot conceive of mendacity at industrial scale — described both the mechanism and the audience-psychology that makes it work. The asymmetry is the engine: small lies invite scrutiny because they're commensurable with everyday deception; *big* lies foreclose scrutiny because nothing in everyday experience prepares audiences to evaluate them.
## The 2020 application
The transposition of the phrase to the 2020 election fraud claim was deliberate. Historians, journalists, and Democratic officials reached for "the Big Lie" specifically because of its Hitler provenance — the analogy was the rhetorical work the term was doing. Republican officials objecting to the framing ([[Kevin McCarthy]], [[Liz Cheney]]'s antagonists) understood this; their pushback wasn't about the falsity of the election claim but about being labeled with the Hitler-comparison.
The 2020 application has the structural features Hitler described:
- **Scale** — claiming that the entire 2020 election apparatus was fraudulent across multiple states with different officials and procedures
- **Repetition** — sustained for years across rallies, social media, and Republican primary campaigns
- **No retreat** — the lack of admissible evidence becomes part of the claim ("they covered it up")
- **Mobilization function** — the lie became the loyalty test that organized the post-2020 Republican Party
## How the 2020 lie was built, and what it cost
*Merged in from a parallel `Concepts/Big Lie` page, 2026-08-31.*
**It was pre-built, not improvised.** Trump laid the groundwork months before the election, insisting the only way he could lose would be through fraud — targeting mail-in voting expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. After the loss, Trump and allies including [[Rudy Giuliani]], [[Sidney Powell]] and [[Michael Flynn]] promoted a cascade of specific theories: rigged [[Dominion Voting Systems]] machines, suitcases of ballots, dead voters, [[Smartmatic]] foreign interference.
**None survived scrutiny.** More than 60 lawsuits, lost virtually all of them, many before Republican-appointed judges. [[William Barr]] stated in December 2020 that DOJ had found no evidence of widespread fraud. [[Jack Smith]]'s federal indictment later documented Trump continuing to press the claims after his own advisors told him they were false. That sequence is the "no retreat" feature above, observed in the field: the absence of evidence was absorbed into the claim rather than ending it.
**The mobilization function cashed out on January 6.** The December 19, 2020 "Be there, will be wild!" post summoned supporters; the rally speech directed them at the Capitol mid-certification. Participants came from [[Oath Keepers]], [[Proud Boys]] and [[QAnon]], all operating inside the frame the lie had built. The House Select Committee concluded the attack was coordinated rather than spontaneous, with the Big Lie as its ideological engine. [[Mike Pence]]'s refusal to reject electoral votes — a power he did not have — drew public condemnation from Trump while the Capitol was under siege.
**The institutional damage outlasted the event.** More than 400 restrictive voting bills were introduced across 49 states in 2021 alone, targeting mail-in voting, early voting and registration — the [[Voter Suppression]] playbook, newly justified. Nonpartisan election administrators were targeted for replacement by partisan loyalists. Congress passed the [[Electoral Count Reform Act]] in 2022 to close the procedural gaps Trump had tried to exploit.
**And the propagators knew.** The [[Fox-Dominion Settlement]] — $787.5M — surfaced internal communications showing [[Fox News]] hosts and executives privately acknowledging the fraud claims were false while amplifying them on air. That is the cleanest available evidence that the Big Lie functioned as a **business model** inside the [[Conservative Media Ecosystem]], not merely as a belief.
## Why "the Big Lie" entry is Terminology, not Concept
The *phenomenon* of large-scale lies is studied across propaganda research and lives at the [[Disinformation Hub]] hub. **The phrase "the Big Lie" is itself the analytically interesting object.** Specific reasons:
1. The phrase imports the Hitler analogy whether the speaker intends it or not — using "the Big Lie" is already a political claim about the scale and family resemblance of the falsehood.
2. The phrase has been deliberately deployed by historians and journalists ([[Timothy Snyder]], [[Jane Mayer]], others) to *force* the comparison into mainstream political vocabulary.
3. The Republican counter-effort to suppress the phrase ("don't call it that"; preferring "election integrity concerns") is itself a confirmation that the *phrase* — not just the underlying claim — is what's being contested.
A separate `/Concepts/` entry on the Big Lie tactic in propaganda theory could exist; this entry treats the *English-language phrase as deployed in 2020-and-after American political journalism*.

### Adjacent vocabulary in the same operational family *(added 2026-05-19)*
The 2026-05-19 [[Disinformation Lexicon]] buildout produced multiple adjacent-vocabulary entries that operate in coordinated-or-parallel ways with the Big Lie rhetorical pattern. The relationships below distinguish each from the Big Lie's specific audacity-as-credibility mechanism:
- [[Election Denialism]] — the *broader phenomenon* of which the post-2020 Big Lie is the principal-claim component; Election Denialism names the *movement infrastructure* + *2024 candidate slate* + *administrative-capture strategy* of which the Big Lie is the single-claim form
- [[Gaslighting]] — companion reality-distortion pattern; gaslighting operates at the *perception-undermining* level (target loses confidence in own observation); Big Lie operates at the *audacity-of-assertion* level
- [[DARVO]] — perpetrator-response pattern; frequently activates when Big Lie claims face institutional or legal challenge; Trump-administration response to E. Jean Carroll case, January 6 prosecution, and 2024 NY conviction substantially deploys DARVO
- [[Cherry-Picking]] — the *evidence-selection* operation that Big Lie campaigns substantially require to maintain surface-level credibility (post-2020 fraud-claim "evidence" was substantially cherry-picked from millions of available data points)
- [[Just Asking Questions]] — the *interrogative-deniability* rhetorical move that Big Lie campaigns deploy when challenged on specific claims; allows continued circulation without binding-assertion accountability
- [[Moving the Goalposts]] — the *criterion-shifting* pattern that Big Lie campaigns deploy in response to evidentiary challenge; canonical post-2020 fraud → Dominion → chain-of-custody → voter-rolls → algorithmic-manipulation → mail-in-voting sequence
- [[Moral Panic]] — the *audience-mobilization* mechanism Big Lie campaigns substantially deploy; the post-2020 Stop-the-Steal mobilization operates partly as moral-panic infrastructure
- [[Overton Window]] — the *discourse-shift* mechanism Big Lie campaigns can produce when sustained over time; the post-2020 normalization of contesting-election-outcomes within the Republican coalition is an Overton-shift outcome
- [[Propaganda Feedback Loop]] — the *structural-ecosystem mechanism* through which Big Lie claims circulate and consolidate within the right-wing media ecosystem (Benkler/Faris/Roberts framework)
- [[Wallpaper Effect]] — the *saturation-amplification* mechanism (Ailes-era [[Fox News]] programming-discipline pattern) through which Big Lie claims achieve the sustained cross-surface visibility required for cultural normalization
- [[Hate Speech]] — the *contested-vocabulary* infrastructure that Big Lie campaigns often exploit; framing institutional fact-checking as itself the form of suppression
- [[Whisper Campaign]] — the *informal-channels* deployment mechanism complementing Big Lie public assertion; pre-internet political-attack tradition (Atwater 1988, Rove 2000) operationally adapted for digital-era Big Lie support infrastructure
