> Orientation is here; the full discipline cluster — the four-field tradition, theory, race, culture and power — lives at [[Anthropology Hub]].
Anthropology is the study of human societies through the assumption that one's own arrangements are not the natural ones. That single methodological commitment is what makes it useful in this vault, because almost every claim the contemporary right makes about tradition, nature and civilisation is a claim that a particular arrangement is the natural one.
The discipline arrives here with an unusual liability, and the vault states it up front: **anthropology built scientific racism before it dismantled it.** Nineteenth-century physical anthropology supplied the measurements, the hierarchies and the vocabulary that racial pseudoscience still recycles. That the field then produced the most rigorous demolition of those ideas — Boas and his students establishing race as a social rather than biological category — is what makes it a credible witness rather than a compromised one. Both halves belong on the record; the [[Race as Social Construct]] material only carries weight because the discipline is testifying against its own history.
Three concepts recur throughout the vault's coverage.
**Imagined communities**, from Benedict Anderson, explains nations as things people believe into existence — held together by shared media and simultaneity rather than by acquaintance. It is the most useful single idea for analysing nationalist movements, because it makes the imagining a mechanism rather than an insult.
**Ritual and political performance** treats rallies, oaths, flags and processions as doing work rather than expressing sentiment. A ritual does not need to be believed to be effective; it needs to be performed publicly, which connects it directly to the compliance mechanism described at [[Normative Threat]].
**Cultural relativism** is the discipline's most misread export. As method it means suspending judgment in order to understand a practice on its own terms; it does not mean all practices are equally defensible, and the vault keeps the methodological and moral senses apart because collapsing them is how the idea gets used as a cudgel in culture-war argument.
