# American Sunlight Project The American Sunlight Project (ASP) is a pro-democracy nonprofit founded in April 2024 to counter [[Disinformation]] and to defend the researchers and institutions that study it. It was launched by [[Nina Jankowicz]] — the disinformation expert who briefly led the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Disinformation Governance Board before a right-wing pressure campaign forced its closure — together with former [[Protect Democracy]] figure Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos. Jankowicz has said it opened with about $1 million in donor commitments. ASP belongs in the KB as a node on the *counter*-disinformation, pro-democracy side of the ledger (see [[Resistance Hub]]): an explicit institutional response to the campaign — waged through outlets, influencers, and congressional investigations — to discredit and legally harass disinformation researchers. Its stated mission is "to increase the cost of lies that undermine democracy." ## Activity One of ASP's first moves was to press [[Jim Jordan]]'s House Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the [[Federal Government]] to release the full, unedited transcripts of its closed-door depositions of independent disinformation researchers — arguing that the subcommittee had selectively leaked excerpts to fuel a misleading narrative that anti-disinformation work amounts to government censorship. The organization is structured as a 501(c)(4), which gives it more latitude to lobby than a charity and means it does not disclose its donors. ## See Also - [[Nina Jankowicz]] - [[Disinformation]] - [[Resistance Hub]]
