# Stephen Miller — "iron laws of the world"
> [!quote] "Jake, we live in a law— I'm sorry, we live in a world in which you can talk all you want about international niceties and everything else, but we live in a world, in the real world, Jake, that is governed by strength, that is governed by force, that is governed by power. These are the iron laws of the world that have existed since the beginning of time."
> — Stephen Miller, CNN's *The Lead* with Jake Tapper, January 5, 2026
In the same interview: "We're a superpower. And under President Trump, we are going to conduct ourselves as a superpower."
## Context
Said by White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller on the day captured Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro appeared in a New York courtroom, following the US special-forces raid (nearly 200 personnel on the ground) that seized him from Venezuela. Trump had claimed the US was now "running Venezuela," had threatened Colombia, told Mexico to "get their act together," and warned Iran it would "get hit very hard." Tapper pressed Miller on the legal basis for seizing a foreign head of state without congressional authorization; the "iron laws" passage was Miller's answer to questions about international law and sovereignty.
In the same interview Miller extended the logic to [[Manifest Destiny]] territory: "The United States is the power of NATO. For the United States to secure the Arctic region, to protect and defend NATO and NATO interests, obviously, Greenland should be part of the United States" — adding that "nobody is going to fight the United States over the future of Greenland." The State Department reinforced the message the same day with a social media post showing Trump over the words "This is Our Hemisphere" — an explicit [[Monroe Doctrine]] revival.
[[Bernie Sanders]], asked by Tapper to respond, said: "Mr. Miller gave a very good definition of imperialism."
## Why this matters
1. **The most explicit might-makes-right statement of doctrine from inside the second Trump administration.** Not an anonymous aide, not a leaked memo — the deputy chief of staff, on camera, stating that strength, force, and power govern the "real world" and that international law is "niceties." This is the canonical receipt for the administration's open rejection of the rules-based order, useful any time the question is whether the lawlessness is a bug or the stated philosophy.
2. **The foreign-policy bookend to Miller's domestic authoritarianism.** "[[Stephen Miller - will not be questioned]]" (2017) asserted unreviewable presidential power against domestic courts; "iron laws of the world" asserts it against international law and foreign sovereignty. Nine years apart, same speaker, same structure: power answers to nothing. Pairs also with "[[Stephen Miller - domestic extremist organization]]" as the enemies-within half of the project.
3. **Direct descendant of "we're an empire now."** The lineage from the Bush-era "[[Karl Rove - reality-based community]]" quote ("when we act, we create our own reality") runs straight here — except what was anonymous and deniable in 2002 is now on-the-record administration doctrine. CNN's Stephen Collinson read it as the repudiation of the Atlantic Charter premise that powerful nations may not impose their will on smaller ones — the foundation of the UN and NATO frameworks.
4. **Named by its own logic.** As with "reality-based community," the adversary supplied the framing: Sanders' "a very good definition of imperialism" gives the quote its critical handle. The "iron laws" phrasing itself carries strong social-Darwinist and *Machtpolitik* resonance — the vocabulary of the 19th-century power politics the postwar order was built to bury.

- **Wording note**: CNN's January 6 analysis piece quotes the shortened form "These are the iron laws of the world." The full transcript form — "These are the iron laws of the world that have existed since the beginning of time" — includes the trailing clause and Miller's false start ("we live in a law— I'm sorry"). Both are verbatim; cite the transcript form for the full passage.
