# Pat Buchanan — the invasion unresisted
> [!quote] "We are witnessing how nations perish. We are entered upon the final act of our civilization. The last scene is the deconstruction of the nations. The penultimate scene, now well underway, is the invasion unresisted."
> — Pat Buchanan, *State of Emergency: The Third World Invasion and Conquest of America*, 2006
## Context
Buchanan published *State of Emergency* in 2006, at the height of the Bush-era immigration-reform fight; it reached the New York Times bestseller list. The book's subtitle does the work openly — immigration from Latin America and across the Mediterranean is an "invasion and conquest" — and the text compares migrants to the barbarian invasions that ended Rome. Buchanan had been working the theme since his 1992 "religious war" convention speech (see [[Pat Buchanan - religious war for the soul of America]]) and his 2002 *The Death of [[the West]]*; this is its most distilled statement.
## Why this matters
**1. The bridge between fringe and mainstream.** Powell was cast out of his party; Buchanan ran the same frame to bestseller lists and cable ubiquity. *State of Emergency* domesticated "invasion" as an American mass-market category two years before it began appearing in presidential-campaign rhetoric.
**2. The Rome move.** Casting migration as the barbarian invasions that ended Rome makes restriction not a policy preference but civilizational self-defense — the same escalation Hegseth performs at Normandy by casting migration as the successor threat to Nazism. Both license emergency measures: nobody "negotiates" with an invasion.
**3. Direct lineage to the violence corpus.** The El Paso shooter's manifesto is structured around "invasion" of Texas; the language travels intact from Buchanan's subtitle to the manifesto genre. The frame's mainstream and violent careers are the same career at different velocities.
## Verification
- **Primary**: *State of Emergency* (Thomas Dunne Books, 2006), opening chapter. Passage widely reproduced in reviews and excerpts; wording uncontested.
- **Consistency**: Buchanan restated the framing across *The Death of the West* (2002) and *Suicide of a Superpower* (2011).
