# Anthony Fauci — "unhinged obsession"
> [!quote] "The sole reason [Paul] is calling me before this committee is to get me to say something—anything—that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, quote, behind bars, unquote. Any reasonable person who has followed his unhinged obsession with me would readily come to the same conclusion."
> — Anthony Fauci, opening statement, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, July 29, 2026
## Context
Fauci's opening statement at the [[Fauci Diary Hearing]], delivered before he began invoking the Fifth Amendment — which he would go on to do more than 100 times over roughly three hours.
In the same statement he explained the invocation itself: "Although it pains me to do so, because of the respect I have for the legislative branch of government, and my decades-long record of cooperating with Congress, under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions."
The stated legal reason was perjury exposure. [[Joe Biden]]'s January 2025 preemptive pardon covered past federal offenses; it could not cover a false statement not yet made. Any answer given under oath on July 29 was fully prosecutable.
Committee chair [[Rand Paul]] announced at the hearing's close that he would call a contempt vote, arguing the Fifth invocation was "unsupported" *because* Fauci had been pardoned — an argument that restates rather than answers the objection.
## Why This Matters
This is a witness naming the purpose of the proceeding on the record, and doing it by quoting the chairman back to himself. The load-bearing element is not the insult "unhinged" but the citation: Paul had made "repeated public pledges" that Fauci would end up behind bars. A committee chair who has publicly committed to a specific outcome for a specific person, and then subpoenas that person, has supplied the predicate for exactly the inference Fauci drew.
It is also a rare instance of the target of an oversight campaign refusing the frame while still complying with the subpoena — appearing as ordered, but declining to supply the raw material. The cost was a hundred filmed invocations and a contempt referral. Fauci's calculation, reported afterward, was that there was no better option available.
