# Ratepayer Protection Act
Bipartisan bill directing state utility regulators to *consider* requiring data centers and other very large electricity consumers to bear the cost of infrastructure built to serve them. It passed the House 417–3 in September 2026 and then failed in the Senate on 2026-09-30, 57–43, short of the 60 needed to break a filibuster, with only four Democrats voting yes. [[Chuck Schumer]] led the opposition on the ground that "consider" is not "require," calling the bill toothless.
