# Ensuring a Fair and Accurate Census Act
**H.R. 8326, 117th Congress** — introduced 11 July 2022, reported in the House 9 September 2022, referred to the Senate 19 September 2022, and never enacted. It died when the 117th Congress ended.
The bill matters to the [[Census Bureau Org Chart]] as a negative: it is the attempt to put in statute several things the Bureau's structure still lacks. It would have created a **single Deputy Director** as a career-reserved position — the post that has no statutory existence at all, which is why it could be abolished and split in two by press release in June 2026. It would also have given statutory authority to the census advisory committees, which instead remained discretionary and were terminated by notice in 2025 under [[Executive Order 14217]]; and it would have barred the Secretary from including in a decennial census any subject or question not submitted to Congress under 13 U.S.C. § 141(f).
Each of those provisions closes a gap that the 2025–26 restructuring then walked through.
