# Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act > [!note] Stub — fill out Law (H.R. 1042) signed May 13, 2024 and effective August 2024, banning imports of Russian low-enriched uranium — which had supplied roughly 27% of US civilian-reactor demand — with a DOE waiver process running through January 1, 2028 to avoid fuel shortages. Its passage unlocked $2.72 billion appropriated to rebuild domestic enrichment and HALEU capacity (DOE selected Centrus, General Matter, Orano, and GLE as contractors in January 2026). Expand with the waiver controversy, the HALEU bottleneck, and the advanced-reactor fuel chain. See [[Uranium]].
