# Collins v. Yellen The Supreme Court decision of **June 23, 2021** (opinion by Justice Samuel Alito) holding 7–2 that the law protecting the director of the [[FHFA]] from removal except "for cause" violated the separation of powers, so the President may fire the director at will. The Court unanimously rejected the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shareholders' statutory challenge to the Treasury "net worth sweep," and gave them no automatic remedy for the constitutional defect. President Biden replaced FHFA Director Mark Calabria the same day. It extended [[Seila Law v. CFPB]] (2020); see [[Removal Power]]. > [!note] Stub > This is a short entry that hasn't been fully written yet.
