# Allen v. Caster
The Supreme Court order of **May 2026**, 608 U.S. ___ (2026), vacating the three-judge District Court injunctions against Alabama's 2023 congressional map and remanding for reconsideration in light of [[Louisiana v. Callais]]. It is the second of three 2026 dispositions in the Alabama redistricting litigation and the hinge between the 2023 merits ruling in [[Allen v. Milligan]] and the June 2, 2026 stay that put the 2023 map into the midterm elections.
The vacatur restored Alabama's 2023 plan — the map with a single majority-Black district — **one week before the state's May 19 primary, while voting was already under way**. Alabama then split its primary: three unaffected districts voted as scheduled, and in the four districts whose lines changed, ballots were cast but the congressional votes did not count. The legislature authorized a special primary, which the Governor set for August 11.
Justice [[Sonia Sotomayor]] dissented, warning that the order would "unleash chaos and . . . confuse voters," and noting that *Callais* had expressly declined to overrule *Allen* while the Court was nonetheless unwinding *Allen*'s remedy.
See [[Allen v. Milligan]] for the full sequence and [[Purcell Principle]] for the doctrine invoked on both sides.
