# Executive Order 14347 **Status: stub — expand.** **"Restoring the United States Department of War." Signed September 5, 2025.** Authorizes the use of "Department of War" and "Secretary of War" as **secondary titles** in correspondence, public communications, ceremonial contexts, and non-statutory documents, and directs the Secretary to recommend legislative and executive actions to make the change permanent. ⚠️ **The order does not rename the department.** Only Congress can do that: the [[Department of Defense]] and the office of Secretary of Defense are statutory creations, and every statute — including the deployment authorities in Titles 10 and 32 — still says "Secretary of Defense." A codification proposal was sent to Congress in April 2026 for the FY2027 cycle, requiring roughly 7,600 conforming changes to federal law. Signage and the war.gov domain changed; the legal name did not. ## See also - [[National Guard Federalization Flow]] · [[National Guard]] · [[Posse Comitatus Act]] · [[Insurrection Act]]
