# Statistical Policy Directive No. 3 > [!note] Stub > This is a short entry that hasn't been fully written yet. One of the standing directives the [[Office of Management and Budget]] issues to the federal statistical agencies. It covers the compilation, release and evaluation of the principal federal economic indicators — the schedule on which figures such as the [[Consumer Price Index]] and the national income accounts are published, and the restrictions on who may see them before the public does. It matters because it is one of the few instruments that says anything at all about *when* a federal statistic appears. The 2024 rule codifying the fundamental responsibilities of recognized statistical agencies at 5 C.F.R. part 1321 leaned on this directive and on Statistical Policy Directive No. 4 rather than adding a public-notice requirement of its own, and it added only a duty to notify the [[Chief Statistician of the United States]] when a recurring product's release schedule changes. ## See also - [[Statistical Policy Directive No. 1]] — the directive that states the fundamental responsibilities of a federal statistical agency - [[How a Statistical Agency Is Defunded or Discontinued]] — the routes by which a federal statistic stops being produced, and how little notice any of them requires - [[Chief Statistician of the United States]] — the official a schedule change must be reported to - [[Federal Statistical System Tree]] — the thirteen principal statistical agencies these directives bind alike - [[Office of Management and Budget]]
