# Zach Dembo
**Zach Dembo** is a Kentucky Democrat who won the open seat in **Kentucky's 6th Congressional District** on November 3, 2026, the Associated Press projected, defeating Republican Ralph Alvarado. The Lexington-area district had been held by Republican [[Andy Barr]] since 2013, Trump carried it by about 15 points, and analysts watched it on election night as one of the first signs of how large a Democratic year it would be. Dembo is a Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps veteran, a former federal prosecutor who resigned in 2025 citing the Trump administration, and a former policy adviser to Gov. [[Andy Beshear]].

## Background
- **Kentucky roots.** He describes himself as a ninth-generation Kentuckian (LEX18, Spectrum News 1).
- **Teacher.** He taught after college; VoteVets' profile says he taught eighth-grade English in the Mississippi Delta through Teach For America, and the Blue Dog PAC describes him as a former teacher in an underserved community.
- **Navy JAG officer.** He served on active duty as a lawyer in the Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps (VoteVets, Blue Dog PAC). In the general election he called himself "the only veteran in the race" (Spectrum News 1).
- **Justice Department prosecutor.** He became a federal prosecutor in the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and later prosecuted cases in Lexington (VoteVets, LEX18). At his July 2025 launch he described that work as "fighting corruption and protecting civil rights and constitutional rights" (LEX18).
- **Beshear administration.** Beshear named him a policy adviser in 2020 and later his legislative director (VoteVets, LEX18).
## Leaving the Justice Department
Dembo resigned from the Justice Department in 2025 and launched his campaign on July 17, 2025. He tied the decision to the Trump administration: "I swore an oath to the Constitution and not any one person," he said at the launch (LEX18), and WUKY reported that he left over what he saw as corruption in the department under Trump. In October 2026 he told Spectrum News 1 that he and his wife decided together that he should resign over "the corruption coming out of D.C."
## The 2026 campaign
- **Primary.** He won a crowded May 19, 2026 Democratic primary with 39.6 percent, ahead of state Rep. Cherlynn Stevenson's 31.5 percent. See [[KY-06-2026]].
- **Message.** He ran on costs and corruption, calling them "the biggest issue right now" and citing grocery, gas and diesel prices, and on "protecting affordable health care" (Spectrum News 1). He campaigned against the administration's tariffs and the war with Iran (LEX18), and pitched himself to independents as "an independent fighter," telling WUKY "there are things national Democrats have done that I'm fed up with."
- **Support.** Beshear headlined a June 2026 rally for him in Lexington (WUKY). The Blue Dog PAC endorsed him, and VoteVets lists him among its endorsed candidates.
- **Opposition money.** In a single late-October filing, the Trump-aligned [[No Going Back PAC]] reported spending about $465,000 against Dembo and about $564,000 for Alvarado; see [[No Going Back PAC 10.8M House Program October 2026]].
- **Attacks on his opponent.** Dembo and his allies tied Alvarado to former Gov. Matt Bevin, whose 2019 running mate Alvarado had been (WUKY, Spectrum News 1).
