# Xi Van Fleet
**Xi Van Fleet** is a Chinese-American conservative activist and author who survived [[Mao Zedong]]'s [[Cultural Revolution]] as a child in China before immigrating to the United States. She became a national figure in June 2021 after a viral public-comment speech to the Loudoun County, Virginia school board, in which she compared the teaching of critical race theory to the Maoist campaign she had lived through — telling the board, "This is indeed the American version of the Chinese Cultural Revolution."
The speech made her a prominent voice in the parental-rights and anti-CRT movement and a frequent conservative-media guest, and she later wrote *Mao's America: A Survivor's Warning* (2023). Van Fleet occupies a distinctive place in the [[Cultural Revolution Rhetoric]] pattern: where most American invokers of the analogy reach for it as rhetoric, she deploys it as lived testimony — which is precisely what gives her version its persuasive force, and what makes the comparison's accuracy worth examining rather than assuming. She belongs to the [[Chinese History Hub]]'s arc on how Chinese revolutionary history is repurposed in American politics.
