# William K. Marshall III **Status: stub — expand.** **William K. Marshall III** has been **Director of the [[Bureau of Prisons]]** since April 21, 2025, running roughly 122 facilities, some 36,000 staff, and about 156,000 federal prisoners. He came from 25 years with the West Virginia State Police and a term as commissioner of that state's corrections division. The BOP directorship is a presidential appointment requiring no Senate confirmation. Marshall's tenure coincides with a $5 billion BOP appropriation carried in the [[Big Beautiful Bill]] — roughly $3 billion for staffing and $2 billion for facilities — and with congressional scrutiny of inmate-designation decisions. ## See also - [[Bureau of Prisons]] · [[Department of Justice]] · [[DOJ Component Tree]]
