# Tom Daschle
Former Senate Majority Leader (D-SD; led Senate Democrats 1995–2005) whose post-Senate career named a loophole: the **"Daschle loophole"** (see [[Shadow Lobbying]]). After losing his 2004 race he earned millions as an unregistered "policy advisor" at [[Alston & Bird]] and later [[DLA Piper]], calibrating his work to stay under the Lobbying Disclosure Act's registration threshold — before voluntarily registering as a lobbyist in 2016. His 2009 nomination as Obama's HHS secretary collapsed over unpaid taxes on a donor-provided car and driver.
