# Tim Walz **Tim Walz** is the Democratic Governor of Minnesota since January 2019 and the 2024 Democratic nominee for Vice President on the ticket with [[Kamala Harris]] — a former high-school teacher, football coach and [[National Guard]] sergeant major who won a Republican-leaning southern Minnesota House seat six times before the governorship, and whose "mind your own damn business" framing was the ticket's populist register. After the loss to [[Donald Trump]] and [[JD Vance]] he announced in September 2025 that he would seek a third term. On **January 5, 2026** he abandoned the campaign. ## The fraud scandal The reason was a state fraud problem that became a national one. Minnesota's Medicaid and social-services programs — after the Feeding Our Future child-nutrition fraud of the pandemic years, then the autism-services and housing-stabilization programs — had been looted on a scale state auditors put in the billions; a YouTuber's December 2025 video showing publicly funded daycare centers with no children in them went viral, the Trump administration paused federal child-care funds to the state, and Walz, whose administration had been warned for years, said he "can't give a political campaign my all" while fixing it. He declined to resign — "I am committed to this state more than I've ever been" — and served out the term. [[Amy Klobuchar]] was reported to be weighing the race to succeed him. ## Why he matters here Walz is the 2024 ticket's lesson on both sides: for Democrats, that the folksy Midwestern governor was not the answer to the working-class question the campaign asked; for the right, a made-to-order proof that Democratic governance means fraud — the Minnesota story ran on Fox for a month and the "Somali daycare" framing gave the immigration argument a welfare-state chapter. The vault records the scandal's facts because the argument built on them is now standard. See [[MN-Gov-2026]] for the race to succeed him and [[MN-Sen-2026]] for the open Senate seat. ## See Also - [[Kamala Harris]] · [[Donald Trump]] · [[JD Vance]] · [[Amy Klobuchar]] · [[National Guard]] - [[2026 Midterms Hub]]
