# Sigmund Freud Austrian neurologist (1856–1939) and founder of psychoanalysis, whose theories of the unconscious, repression, defense mechanisms, and the structural model of the psyche (id, ego, superego) reshaped twentieth-century psychology, psychiatry, and culture. In *Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego* (1921) and *Civilization and Its Discontents* (1930) he extended psychoanalysis to crowds, leadership, and the tension between instinct and civilization. In the Right Wing KB he appears in two opposite registers: as the **intellectual taproot** of the authoritarian-personality and mass-psychology literature the vault relies on, and as a **perennial villain** of reactionary and antisemitic "cultural-Marxism" polemics. ## Why It Matters in This KB ### 1. The taproot of authoritarian-personality theory Freud's account of group psychology — the crowd binding itself to an idealized leader who replaces each member's ego-ident and conscience — is the seed of the entire research tradition the KB draws on. The [[Frankfurt School]] fused Freud with Marx to explain why masses embrace authoritarian leaders against their own interests; that fusion produced [[Theodor Adorno]]'s *[[The Authoritarian Personality]]* and runs forward to [[Erich Fromm]]'s *[[The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness]]* and modern [[Authoritarian Personality Theory]]. Almost every "psychology of the strongman follower" argument in the vault is, at root, Freudian. ### 2. The concepts the vault reuses Several Freudian ideas are working tools across the [[Narcissism]] cluster: **narcissism** itself (Freud's 1914 essay introduced it as a clinical concept), **projection** and **denial** as defense mechanisms, **the death drive** as a model of destructiveness, and the **idealization of the leader**. The vault uses these descriptively, well aware that much of Freud's specific clinical theory is empirically contested — the value is the conceptual vocabulary, not a claim that classical psychoanalysis is settled science. ### 3. Freud as reactionary bogeyman Freud is also a recurring **target** in the material the KB catalogs. As a Jewish thinker associated with sexuality, the unconscious, and the Frankfurt School, he is a central figure in the antisemitic [[Cultural Marxism]] conspiracy theory, which casts psychoanalysis as a deliberate weapon to demoralize and subvert Western civilization. Tracing how a foundational psychologist becomes a conspiracy villain is itself one of the vault's case studies in reactionary intellectual history. ### 4. A contested legacy held at arm's length Freud belongs in the KB not as an endorsed authority but as a **hinge figure**: indispensable for understanding the lineage of authoritarianism research, simultaneously a flashpoint in the culture war. The vault keeps both facts in view rather than treating him as simply right or simply discredited. ## See Also - [[The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness]] — Fromm's Freud-derived study of cruelty - [[Erich Fromm]] — Extends and revises Freud's account of aggression - [[The Authoritarian Personality]] — The Frankfurt-Freud synthesis in empirical form - [[Frankfurt School]] — Fused Freud with Marx - [[Theodor Adorno]] — Lead author of the authoritarian-personality study - [[Cultural Marxism]] — The conspiracy theory that makes Freud a villain - [[Narcissism]] — Cluster using Freud's clinical vocabulary
