# Shirley Weber
Secretary of State of California — the state's chief elections officer — and therefore the official on the receiving end of the Trump administration's October 2026 campaign to stop California counting mail ballots it says were sent to noncitizens. She was elected to the office in **2022** with 60.1% after service in the California State Assembly, and is on the ballot for a second term on **November 3, 2026**, having taken 58.78% of the June 2 top-two primary against Republican Donald P. Wagner's 36.74%.
In the wiki for one reason: she is the named counterparty in [[DOJ California Noncitizen Ballot Litigation 2026]]. The Justice Department's October 16 letter threatening local election officials with prosecution was addressed to the Los Angeles County Counsel and copied to her, and she has said the administration produced no evidence for its claim that 20,000 ballot recipients are noncitizens.
> [!note] Short entry
> This page covers her role in the October 2026 federal ballot dispute. Her biography, Assembly record and earlier decisions as chief elections officer are not covered yet.
