# Shayne Coplan
**Shayne Coplan** (born June 14, 1998, New York City) founded [[Polymarket]] in June 2020 and runs it as CEO. His arc is the prediction-market industry's arc in miniature: an offshore crypto betting site under federal investigation in 2024, a billionaire's company backed by the New York Stock Exchange and the president's son by 2025.
## Background
Coplan grew up in Manhattan, attended the Beacon School, and studied computer science at New York University before leaving in his freshman year. He started Polymarket during the pandemic, at 21, by his own account "running out of money" and two and a half years out of school (Fortune).
## Raid to billionaire
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Jan 2022 | The [[CFTC]] fines Polymarket $1.4 million for offering unregistered event contracts; the company agrees to block U.S. users. |
| Nov 13, 2024 | A week after the election that made Polymarket famous, FBI agents search Coplan's Manhattan apartment and seize his phone and electronics in an investigation of whether the platform kept taking U.S. customers. |
| July 2025 | The Justice Department and the CFTC close their investigations without charges. |
| Aug 2025 | [[Donald Trump Jr.]]'s [[1789 Capital]] invests; Trump Jr. joins the advisory board. |
| Oct 7, 2025 | [[Intercontinental Exchange]], owner of the New York Stock Exchange, commits up to $2 billion at an $8 billion pre-money valuation. Bloomberg names Coplan, then 27, the world's youngest self-made billionaire, on a stake of roughly 11%. |
| Aug 31, 2026 | 1789 Capital leads a $1 billion round at a $21 billion valuation. |
The sequence is the point. The investigation that started under the Biden administration ended within six months of Trump's return, and the Trump family's venture firm bought in a month after that. Nothing in the public record shows the closure was arranged; the timing is what it is.
## Under scrutiny again (2026)
Coplan now answers for the platform's conduct rather than its legality:
- **Insider trading.** Polymarket markets on the Maduro capture, Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran, and Khamenei's death all drew suspiciously timed bets (see [[Iran War Market Manipulation]]).
- **Paid influencers.** A June 2026 POLITICO investigation and a July 2026 Wall Street Journal investigation documented undisclosed payments to creators, including staged "winning bet" videos on look-alike sites. The [[CFTC]] opened an inquiry that reaches the company's marketing and compliance (see [[Paid Political Influencers]]).
- **Congress.** On August 26, 2026, Sens. [[Alex Padilla]] and [[Mark Warner]] wrote to Coplan and Kalshi's Tarek Mansour about paid influencers spreading false claims about California elections.
- **The states.** On September 24, 2026, New York sued Polymarket as an unlicensed gambling operation; Polymarket countersued the same day.
