# Sergei Surovikin **Sergei Surovikin** is the Russian army general — nicknamed "General Armageddon" in the press for his campaigns in [[Syria]] — who commanded Russia's Aerospace Forces from 2017 and all Russian forces in Ukraine from October 2022 until January 2023, when [[Valery Gerasimov]] replaced him. He was regarded as [[Yevgeny Prigozhin]]'s closest ally in the high command; CNN reported documents listing him as a VIP member of the [[Wagner Group]]. During the [[Wagner Group Mutiny]] he recorded a video urging Wagner to stand down, then disappeared; he was reportedly detained, was removed from his command on August 22, 2023, and was reported released in September. US officials believed he knew of the mutiny in advance. In 2025 he resurfaced in Algeria, reportedly as head of Russia's military advisers there. ## See Also - [[Wagner Group Mutiny]] · [[Yevgeny Prigozhin]] · [[Sergei Shoigu]] · [[Valery Gerasimov]] · [[Russo-Ukrainian War]]
