# Ron Jarmin An economist and career Census Bureau official who served as **Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer** of the Bureau, and as Acting Director on three separate occasions — 2017–2019, 2021–2022, and again from January to September 2025 following [[Robert Santos]]'s resignation. He retired on 15 May 2026. His departure emptied the Bureau's number-two post, and rather than being refilled, the single career Deputy Director / COO position was replaced on 12 June 2026 by two appointed deputy directorships — a restructuring that required no legislation, because Title 13 creates no deputy director at all.
