# Roberto Vannacci
**Born 1968, Lucca.** A serving Italian Army general who self-published a book, was disciplined for it, was elected to the European Parliament on the strength of the scandal, and has now built the party that is dismantling the one that recruited him.
Vannacci is the live test of this vault's central Italian finding: **that successful normalization creates a vacancy on its own right flank.**
## The Book
*Il mondo al contrario* — "The World Upside Down" — self-published in August 2023 while he was in uniform commanding the Military Geographic Institute. Its contents on homosexuality, race and immigration produced a defence-ministry disciplinary proceeding, an eleven-month suspension, and a bestseller.
**The disciplinary action is what made him.** He entered the argument as a general punished by his own ministry for saying what a large audience already believed, which converted an ordinary reactionary tract into evidence for its own thesis. See [[Civil-Military Relations]] — the vault's file on what happens when serving officers become political actors, and why the erosion is slow rather than dramatic.
## Lega, Then Not
[[Matteo Salvini]] recruited him as the Lega's star candidate for the June 2024 European elections. He won a very large personal preference vote, entered the Parliament, and was made deputy federal secretary in 2025.
It did not hold. After months of conflict over the party's direction he broke away, registering **Futuro Nazionale** in **February 2026** and launching it publicly on **8 June 2026**, with a founding congress in Rome the following week.
**Eight sitting parliamentarians went with him — seven from the Lega, one from [[Brothers of Italy]].** He sits with the Europe of Sovereign Nations group in Brussels, the harder-right bloc that [[Giorgia Meloni]] has deliberately avoided.
## The Numbers
An SWG poll on 30 June 2026 put Futuro Nazionale at **5.6%** against the Lega's **5.4%** — the first time the splinter passed the party it split from. By the **25 August 2026** polling average the gap had widened: **Futuro Nazionale 6.6%, Lega 5.9%.**
Roughly four months from launch to overtaking a governing party.
## Meloni's Dilemma
The arithmetic is close enough that neither answer is safe. The governing coalition sits near **40.6%** against a left bloc near **40.5%**; adding Vannacci would settle the 2027 election and cost Meloni the moderation that is her entire international position — Forza Italia, and the Berlusconi family, are on record against it. Excluding him splits the right.
> [!warning] The finding this page exists for
> Vannacci's argument is not that Meloni failed. It is that she **succeeded** — that governing required her to become acceptable to Brussels, to Washington and to the bond market, and that everything she gave up to do it is now available for someone else to promise. **That is not an Italian phenomenon and it is not avoidable by better management.** It is the standing bill for normalization, and the RN, the AfD and every other party running the playbook should expect it to arrive on roughly the same schedule.
