# Roberto Calvi Roberto Calvi (1920-1982) was an Italian banker dubbed "God's Banker" (*Banchiere di Dio*) for his close financial ties to the Holy See. As chairman of [[Banco Ambrosiano]] he presided over a vast offshore fraud network; when the bank collapsed in June 1982 he fled Italy on a false passport and was found hanged beneath London's Blackfriars Bridge. He is the human linchpin of the documented banking strand of [[The Octopus]], connecting the [[Vatican Bank]], the [[Propaganda Due]] (P2) lodge, and the Sicilian Mafia. ## Career and fall Calvi joined Banco Ambrosiano in 1947, became general manager in 1971 and chairman in 1975. In 1981 he was convicted of illegally exporting currency, drawing a four-year suspended sentence and a roughly $19.8 million fine while keeping his post pending appeal. On June 5, 1982 he wrote to Pope John Paul II warning of "a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions." He vanished from his Rome apartment on June 10, 1982, fleeing under the false name "Gian Roberto Calvini" via Venice and Zurich to London. ## The death Calvi's body was found hanging from scaffolding beneath Blackfriars Bridge around 7:30 a.m. on June 18, 1982 (his death is sometimes dated June 17), with several bricks in his pockets and about $14,000 in three currencies. The same day, his secretary Graziella Corrocher fell to her death from a bank window. A first inquest (1982) returned suicide; a second (1983) returned an open verdict. Later forensic work -- a Kroll investigation in the early 1990s and a 2002 exhumation -- concluded the injuries were inconsistent with self-hanging, and City of London Police reopened it as murder in 2003. ## Epistemic status A 2005-07 Rome murder trial affirmed that Calvi was murdered, not a suicide -- but acquitted all five defendants (including Mafia boss Giuseppe "Pippo" Calo) for insufficient evidence, and the acquittals were upheld through 2011. No one has ever been convicted of killing him, and the motive -- Mafia, P2, or protection of Vatican/P2 sponsors -- remains unproven. The "murder, not suicide" finding is the rare hard fact; everything beyond it is theory. ## See also - [[The Octopus]] - [[Banco Ambrosiano]] - [[Vatican Bank]] - [[Propaganda Due]]
