# Rahul Gandhi
Leader of the Opposition in India's Lok Sabha and the most prominent national rival to [[Narendra Modi]]'s Hindu-nationalist **BJP**. Scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that long dominated the **Indian National Congress**, Gandhi spent the first Modi decade as the face of a party in steep decline — and was frequently written off as a dynastic lightweight — before a reinvention that put him at the center of the resistance to Hindu-majoritarian politics.
## Bharat Jodo Yatra and the 2024 result
Gandhi's long cross-country marches — the **Bharat Jodo Yatra** ("Unite India March") of 2022–2023 and its 2024 sequel — covered thousands of kilometers on foot and recast him as a more credible, grassroots figure campaigning explicitly on social harmony against the BJP's polarization. In the **2024 general election**, the Congress-led **INDIA bloc** performed far better than forecast, denying the BJP the outright parliamentary majority it had held since 2014 and forcing Modi into coalition dependence. Gandhi formally became **Leader of the Opposition** — the first to hold the post with full standing in a decade.
## The democratic-backsliding frame
Gandhi has built his case around documented democratic erosion under Modi: pressure on independent media, the use of investigative agencies against opposition figures (he himself faced a 2023 defamation conviction and temporary disqualification from parliament, later stayed), and policies critics say marginalize India's Muslim minority. He frames the contest as one over whether the world's largest democracy preserves its secular-constitutional character.
