# Raúl Torrez
**Raúl Torrez** has been New Mexico's Democratic attorney general since January 2023, after serving as Bernalillo County district attorney (2017–2023). He was a White House Fellow in 2009–10. He is running for a second term in November 2026 against Republican Samuel Kane; both were unopposed in their primaries. His office is best known nationally for suing [[Meta]] and Snap over harms to minors, and he joined the multistate challenge to Elon Musk's authority at [[DOGE]].
## Suing Kalshi (June 2026)
On **June 4, 2026**, Torrez sued [[Kalshi]], calling its sports contracts unlicensed online sports betting. The complaint alleges Kalshi lets 18- to 20-year-olds bet despite New Mexico's minimum gambling age of 21, and ignores the state's licensing framework. "Kalshi has ignored that framework entirely while offering online sports betting within the state." He asked for an injunction.
Eight days later, on **June 12**, the [[CFTC]] sued New Mexico. Chairman [[Michael Selig]] said the state was "the latest state seeking to nullify black letter law and decades of judicial precedent by imposing state gaming laws on federally regulated derivatives exchanges." No ruling had been reported as of early October. See [[CFTC v. Arizona]].
