# Peter Meijer
One-term Republican U.S. Representative for Michigan's 3rd district, centered on Grand Rapids (2021–2023). He is an heir to the Meijer supercenter chain, the grandson of Frederik Meijer, and an Army Reserve intelligence sergeant who served in Iraq (2010–2011). He later worked as a conflict analyst for an international NGO. He succeeded Justin Amash.
## The second impeachment
Meijer had been in office ten days when he cast one of the ten Republican votes to impeach Trump on January 13, 2021 (see [[Trump Second Impeachment]]). On August 24, 2021, he and Democrat [[Seth Moulton]] flew unannounced into Kabul's airport during the Afghanistan evacuation, without advance notice to the Pentagon or the Speaker. Both parties criticized the trip.
## The primary, and the Democrats' role in it
Meijer lost the August 2, 2022 Republican primary to the Trump-endorsed John Gibbs, **48.2% to 51.8%**. In the final days of the race, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee bought ads raising Gibbs's profile with Republican voters. The bet was that he would be the weaker general-election opponent, and it paid off: Democrat Hillary Scholten beat Gibbs in November and took the seat.
He launched a Michigan U.S. Senate campaign in November 2023 and ended it on **April 26, 2024**, before the primary.
## KB significance
Meijer's race shows the purge had two sets of hands on it. Trump's endorsement supplied the motive inside the GOP, and the opposing party's campaign committee spent money to make it succeed. Removing the defector served Trump's loyalty test and the Democrats' general-election math at the same time. See [[Trump Impeachments Timeline]].
