# Pete Aguilar Chair of the House Democratic Caucus since January 2023, the No. 3 position in House Democratic leadership behind [[Hakeem Jeffries]] and the whip. He has represented the Inland Empire (San Bernardino County) since 2015. He sat on the [[House Select Committee on the January 6th Attack]], so he is both a member of the committee now under counter-investigation and one of the leaders deciding how House Democrats handle impeachment in Trump's second term. ## Background Born June 19, 1979, in Fontana, California. He was mayor of Redlands from 2010 to 2014 and won his House seat in 2014. He was Democratic Caucus vice chair from 2021 to 2023, then succeeded Jeffries as chair when Jeffries became leader. ## January 6 committee Pelosi appointed him to the committee on July 1, 2021. He co-led its June 16, 2022 hearing on the pressure campaign against [[Mike Pence]], with investigative counsel John Wood. He was on the House floor during the attack. Like every member, he was covered by [[Joe Biden]]'s January 20, 2025 preemptive pardon. ## The second-term impeachment votes Aguilar's record on [[Al Green]]'s forced impeachment votes tracks the leadership's shift: | Date | Resolution | Aguilar's vote | |---|---|---| | 2025-06-24 | Green's Iran-strikes article | **Voted to table** (with Jeffries and [[Katherine Clark]]; 128 Democrats in all) | | 2025-12-11 | H.Res. 939 ("seditious behavior") | **Present** (with Jeffries and Clark; 47 Democrats) | | 2026-09-15 | H.Res. 1486 (ICE/CBP) | **Present** (46 Democrats plus Thomas Massie) | In December 2025 the leadership explained that impeachment "requires a comprehensive investigative process" the Republican majority had not run. That is the January 6 committee's own model offered as the standard: investigate first, then impeach. ## KB significance The leadership has moved from killing Green's articles to declining to vote on them. Aguilar's three votes are the cleanest record of how House Democrats are positioning impeachment for the 2026 midterms: no floor fight they would lose, no repudiation of the base.
